notice. I understand that 700 men have already arrived at Sookah Lakh One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees , which
is only two marches from Nooshky. On receipt of this please aid us as request
ed. His Highness informed me that he did not place much reliance in thb
report, hut would write to the tribes named as a precautionary measure.
Yesterday, the 27th, I received a letter from Shahgassee GoolamJan, in
which he states that he has tried, in every possible way, to follow the advice I gave
him in Belah, but that the Jamotes dont appreciate kindness, and are intriguing
and causing disturbances. Sirdar Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division. Jean Khan, His Highness’s Naib at Soonemee-
anee, with his adherents, organized a raid on the Shahooks, killing two men and
carrying off two thousand sheep and goats. On this account part of the Sha-
hook tribe had gone over to Ali Khan. Jean Khan had left Soonemeeanee for
Hundah, close to Belah, without the Shahgassee’s permission, and was assisting
all the evil disposed.
Shahgassee Goolam Jan has written most strongly to His Highness stating
that further forbearance will be ruinous to his interests.
Native merchants at Kurrachee and Shikarpoor have sent to their agents
in Candahar and Beloochistan to send down as much wool as they possibly can,
the demand being great and prices good. One thousand camel-loads from
Quetta and Mustoong leave in a day or two, about 400 for Shikarpor, the rest
for Kurrachee. A large kaffila from Candahar, also laden with wool, is expect
ed in a few days.

Captain Harrison, under date 27th August, reports that a large body of
Seistan Belooch are said to be marching on Ohaga and Nooshky. This is pro
bably in retaliation of Sarfuraz Khan’s recent attack on their border.

The Naib of Quetta writes to His Highness as follows:—On the 28th
August Muddut Doomur collected 300 Kakurs and Doomurs. One hundred and
fifty were sent by the Bolan to plunder Kadur Buksh Lehree’s property at
Dozan. The other 150 went to Ghuza Bund. On this date kaffilas from
Candahar and Pesheen were intercepted by the latter party who threw off the
loads, wool, salt, &c., and drove their baggage animals into the hills,—35
camels, 21 donkeys. Before daylight on the 29th what had occurred was
reported to me ; I at once got all the sowars that could be collected and went
in pursuit, leaving instructions for footmen to follow as quickly as possible.
I went by the Surrakholla road and came upon their tracks at*Gitchk. We
waited there in hopes that they would return, but as they did not do so, we

Letter and Enclosures to HM Secretary of State for India, dated 17 October 1871, concerning Persian movements on Chaga [Chagai] and the Seistan [Sīstān] Boundary.

The papers cover: political intelligence; tribal movements; reports of raids; the possibility of a threat by Persia against the territory of Khelat [Kalāt], and northern and western Beloochistan [Baluchistan]; and the need for a speedy settlement of the Seistan boundary question.
