It will be noticed that certain items have been included which can scarcely be
considered as covered by the terms “ travelling expenses and camp equipage,”
and my Committee have been emboldened to appeal for this additional expendi
ture as the expenses of Mr. Newcomen and his staff are calculated to consider
ably exceed the funds this Chamber have been able to collect, trusting it may
be recognized that this Chamber’s endeavours to support to the full extent of
their abilities the enterprise which Government is carrying out for the advance-
ment o£ Indian trade may entitle it to be treated on as liberal a scale as may be
possible. I am to assure you that the interests which this Chamber represents
are probably concerned in this Mission in a much smaller degree than any
other of its sister Associations and that the industries of Cawnpore have
equipped the Chamber’s delegate at no inconsiderable sacrifice. It is most
repugnant to my Committee to have to frame an appeal to the Government of
India in such a matter in view of the very substantial support which has been
already given to the Chamber’s delegate in the matter of the supply of horses
and tentage, etc., but if there should be any surplus from the grant which has
been made in connection with the Mission, it is hoped that Government may
see their way to assisting the Chamber wdth further funds.
