W. West of the ship. Midnight, strong gales with a heavy sea, and severe squalls and rain,
with vivid lightning to the North West ; the lightning bnng such as all on bo«rd had never be
fore seen flashing in broad sheets.—During the night, the wind held pretty steady at 8. 8. W.,
except in the squalls, when it came to Eastward of South.—At noon November 1st, 185i, Longi-
tude 72° 51, East, sounded in 2l) fathoms an I wore ship to the Nortli West, the weatiier having
a very wild appearance, tile Barometer at noon 29.50., Sympisometer 27*60 , and oscillating
much. At 4 p m having ran oflf about 30 miles, hove ship to with head to the Eastward. At
5 p m find the wind veering to the Eastward of South, wore and brought toon the port tack
head to the South West, under a close reefed mainsail, and top sail. At 8 p m blowing a heavy
gale, the wind veering all the time to the Eastward, and Barometer falling rapidly, Barome
ter 27.15, Sympisometer 29.30.. At 9.30. p m violent gusts of wind from the North East, furled
the maintop sails ; Barometer 29.10., Sympisometer 27.90., gale blowing Violent from the North
East till 11pm when it lulled. The Barometer and Sympisometer still falling, afraid the ship
close to the centre of the dylone. Midnight, Barometer 27.0., Sympisometer 26.90. Half an
hour after midnight, the Cyclone burst on the ship from North West with fearful violence,
and continued without intermission till 3 30 a m before any further lull *, the Barometer at 2
a m 29.0., Sympisometer 29.75.*, at 3 am Barometer 29.05., Sympisometer 28.29. ; at 4 a m
B arometer 29.15, Sympisometer 29.10., still blowing a strong gale. At 6 A M Barometer 29.30,
Symlsometer 29.30, moderating fast and the weather clearing up.—At 8 a m set the closed
reefed topsails and fore sail. Noon, November 2nd, Latitude 19°. Longitude 72° 84° East. Bore
up, made all sail for Bombay Harbour, at 5 P M p issed the outer light ship, and at 6 p M came
to anchor in the harbour, having weathered the Cyclone without the least injury to ship, spars,
or sails.”
Ship Futta Moombaruck, J. Wadge, from China 21st August; touched at Anger September
23rd—experienced a Cyclone in lat. 6 South, long. 35 ° 30 East, on the 6th October, also a very
severe S. W. gale on the 1st November in lat, 16 0 40 North, long 30° East ; spoke the El
Dorada 14° North 71° East. Ship Triumph, R T Jackson, for Bombay from Calcutta 00th
September ; experienced very severe weather on the island 2nd November with high confused
sea, lost foremain-top-gallant-mast and sails, lat. between 16 ° 30. N and 17° N., wind veering
from lat. S. W- 20 miles off the Coast.
Remarks on a Cyclone experienced by the Ship Arracan, on her passage
from Liverpool to Bomb >y, \st November \85± t lat. 17° 24’iV,
long. 71° 26’ East.
October 30th and 31st,—Squally unsettled weather with torrents of rain, wind veering from
N. E. to E. N. E. with threatening appearance and falling Barometer.
November 1st.—4 a m Win i about N E, tacked ship to the E S E, dark lowering threatening
appearance with heavy rain, Barometer 29.55 Sympr. 29.70, double reefed the topsails and
stowed the jib and main sail 6lh a m Increasing gale—close reefed the topsails and furl’d the
foresail.— 8 A M Blowing hard, took in the fore and mizen topsails, and hove the ship to
under close reefed main topsail, Barometer 29.40, Sympr. 29.65,sent down main royal yard and
prepared for a gale. Noon—blowing excessive liard, Barometer 29.50. Sympr. 29.60, with tor
rents of rain. At 9 a m when the heaviest of the gale commenced, the wind then N N E con
sequently the centre of the cyclone, bearing E. S. E., the wind veering gradually round to the
North and N. N. W. At noon the wind had veered round to N. N. W., bringing the centre of
the cyclone to bear E N. E., sliewing tlie cyclone to be travelling to the North Westward,
across our bows, and at no very great distance. At 3 P M the Barometer had risen to 29.55,
Sympr. 29.62 with decreasing gale. At 3.30 set close reefed foretopsail and bore up to N. E.,
the wind then about N. W., gale gradually taking off, made sale accordingly, made a smalt
diagram of the bearings of the cyclone at different times, say 9 a. m. and noon, and considered
it to be travelling about N. W. a N., about 15 miles an hour.
