The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and resolutions cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of two Political Letters from the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. to the East India Company Court of Directors The London-based directors of the East India Company who dealt with the daily conduct of the Company's affairs. , dated 16 April 1855 and 28 August 1855. The enclosures are dated 4 March 1854-3 March 1855.

The item relates to actions taken by the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. and Major Atkins Hamerton, HM Consul and Company Agent in the dominions of His Highness the Imaum [Imām] of Muscat, in light of reports by Henry Bartle Edward Frere, Commissioner in Sind [Sindh], of enslaved Indian people being exported to ports in the Persian Gulf The historical term used to describe the body of water between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. . The item includes Hamerton's report on his conversation on the subject with the Imaum of Muscat, following Frere's discovery of enslaved Indian children in the port of Guader [Gwadar].
