Meshed Intelligence Diary No. 33 for the period ending 2nd October 1922.
Tkanscaspia.
1. Khivan Yamuts assisted by other Turkomans are raiding villages near the
railway between Askhabad and Krasnovodsk. Detachments from Tashkent are
continually passing Lutfabad for this area. An arrival from Krasnovodsk states
that small detachments are being embarked for Astrakhan.
2. Kizil Arvat, 12th September.—Supplies are plentiful in the town, as Turko
mans from Persian territory smuggle them in, exchanging the supplies for rifles and
ammunition.
3. Lutfabad, 22nd September. —-Six Afghans, who were recently escorted from
Kushk to Askhabad, have now been sent on to Tashkent.
4. Kaakha, 19th September. —Turkoman rebels captured 19 Bussian soldiers
between Tejend and Sarakhs. The Turkomans released their captives after taking
their horses and rifles. This is only one instance of the many attacks now being
made by Turkomans on small parties of Bussian troops.
5. Persian Sarakhs, 28th September. —The Agent at this place reports,
(i) That all Afghans at Merv and Yolatan have been arrested.
,(ii) Afghans are bringing a large amount of supplies to the Bussian fron
tier.
6. Merv, 12th September. —One regiment of Bussian troops left Merv on the
9th September for Bokhara, in response to a summons for reinforcements against
the rebels.
7. There is much dissatisfaction amongst the troops, who do not wish to be
sent to fight the rebels. Bebellion is openly talked of.
8. Turkomans are raiding villages in the Merv district.

9. Arrivals at Lutfabad report that the rebels are very active near Samarkand.
Khatirchi was entered and plundered before the rebels were driven out.
10. Bussian officials, backed by the military, are pressing the inhabitants for
supplies, which is the cause of many of them joining the ranks of the rebels.
11. Bokhara, 16th Septe?nber. —On the 4th September, the rebels made a strong
attack against the Russian outposts of Bokhara, destroying many villages close in
to the city. Reinforcements brought from Kagan eventually drove the rebels back
from the city.
12. Communiques have been issued about the defeat of the Greek armies by
the Turks, and the capture of much booty and war material. The announcements
state that the arms captured from the Greeks were all supplied by the British,
who hoped for the defeat of the Turks in this way, which would mean the end of
Islam. An official ceremony was held to celebrate the Turkish victory.
13. It was announced in Bokhara that at a conference held in Baku, attended
by members of all CaucasianJGovernments, it was decided that the Turks should be
supported, and recruits’ enlisted for service in Angora with the Tuiks. The
Bokharan Gqvernment proposes to follow the lead given by the Baku Conference.
14. Kilif, 14th September. —Reports from Termez state that the rebel forces
under Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. were defeated near Kabadian, and that the Russians have
occupied this town and Kurghan Tapa, capturing a large amount of rebel stores.
