Samarkand.
15. The railway between Samarkand and Bokhara is being continually damaged
by the rebels, and transport is exceedingly difficult.
16. Katta Kurghan, 17th September .—The rebels were driven from near Katta
Kurehan after heavy fighting, and have retired to the mountains, followed by
Russian troops. Simultaneously with this success the Russians announced that the
rebels under Enver

had been defeated in Eastern Bokhara, and that Enver
had fled into Afghanistan.
17. Samarkand, 16th September. —Heavy fighting is going on within 20 miles
south of Samarkand, and numbers of Russian wounded are arriving at feamarkand
from this front.
18 A wireless message from Moscow states that the British Commander in
Constantinople has invited Russian Menshevik refugees to join the British forces
in Constantinople. The message states that 1,000 Russians joined the British
Army in one day.
19. A new move to extract money from those who have it, is an order that
30 millions of roubles must be paid by anyone who wishes to avoid conscription.
Tashkent.
j 20. The houses of a number of Indians, who posed as supporters of Bolshevism,
| were searched by the Russians, and the Indians were arrested. Subsequently 3
| of the Indians were released. Four Afghans were also arrested at the same time,
I and charged with being in communication with the rebels.
21. A report from Gavanchi (Kevuchi), south of Tashkent, states that at tie
beginning of September, the rebels succeeded in entering two prisons near Tashkent
and after killing the guards released many political and other prisoners, (lasnkent
report, dated 16th September, confirms this statement, and gives the number ol
prisoners released at 800.)
Ferghana.
22. Ferghana rebels are reported to be receiving arms and. ammunition at
Kulab from Afghanistan, and preparations are being made at this place for a big
move against the Russians in Ferghana.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
