Meshed Intelligence Diary No. 30, for the period ending 11th September 1922. ^
Local.
1. Kuchan, 4th September.—The Russians are employing Kurds as messengers
and news agents in Persia ; they are also using them for carrying and distributing
printed propaganda matter. The officer commanding the Persian troops at x
Kuchan is endeavouring to arrest these Russian agents, and the Kurdish Khans
have been informed that they will be held responsible if any of their tribesmen
are found to be in Russian employ.
2. Reference Diary No. 29, paragraph 2. The name of the passenger ship
sunk in the Caspian is given as “ Orel ”, and she is stated to have been one of the
best and fastest ships on the Caspian.
Transcaspia.
3. Rebels between Merv and Askhabad are said to have secretly arranged
with the workmen on the Central Asian Railway to remove the rails before a train
passes laden with stores for the troops west of Merv. When the train is wrecked
the rebels carry off the stores. These stores are being sent from Tashkent for
the detachments of Budyonie’s Army which are located on the railway from
Askhabad to Krasnovodsk.
4. Krasnovodsk, 28th August. —Workmen at the oil wells are giving trouble
because of an order issued which says they are only to receive food and clothing
in return for their work. No pay has been disbursed for some time, and strikes
are frequent.
5. The quarantine at Krasnovodsk has been raised (vide Diary No. 20,
paragraph 5).
6 Askhabad, 1st September. —A committee of Persians and Caucasians has
been formed at Askhabad to work amongst the people there and in Persia, to
revolt against the Persian Government.
7. It is reported that the Persian Consulate has been re-opened, permission
having been received by telegram from Moscow.
8. Persian Sarakhs, 7th September .—^eieienee Diary No. 29, paragraph 5.
Haii Quli’s band has been completely broken up near Tejend, but the leader
escaped towards the Afghan frontier, with 12 followers and 4 machine guns.
9. Merv, 28th August. —An announcement was made that trade, in future,
would be free. By this means considerable merchandise was brought into the
bazars, when it was seized by the Russian authorities, who stated that the goods
were urgently needed at the moment, and that payment would be made later.
Sellers have ceased sending their goods into the bazars. (Similar methods are
being employed in most towns in Turkistan.)
10. Takhta Bazar, 1st September.— There has been considerable trouble on
the railway from Merv to Kushk during the latter part of August. During the
last 5 days not a single train has reached Kushk. There is much discontent
amongst the troops owing to the shortage of supplies.
Khiva.
1 1 ^ Petro Alexandrovsk, 23rd August. —Russians have forcibly recruited a
large number of Yamuts, whom they have sent via Charjui and Tashkent to
Central Russia. r !
12. Rebels are in large numbers on the Bokharan frontier near Uch Kadaq,
at which place the Russians have 1,500 troops with guns and machine guns.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
