13 The Russians sent 3 elders of Khiva to Junaid Khan to request him
to lav down his arms, when he would be appointed Governor o h 1Ya - Junaid
Khan refused saying that his aim was to turn all Bolsheviks out of Khiva. Kght-
ing continues north of Khiva, and is at present all m favour of the Russians, as
Junaid Khan’s men are short of ammunition and supplies.
14. The death of Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. is being contradicted by arrivals at Lutfabad.
Reports state that Enver himself went to Hissar, and has ordered the retreat of
his forces to the north-east.
15. There is said to be more contentment amongst the Russian troops, due
to the fact that they are allowed to rob villages, and lay the blame on the rebels.
The troops are not in accord with the Communist Government, and it is thought
that they will eventually rebel against their leaders.
16. Karakul, 27th August .— Rebe^ about the town have been scattered,
but news comes of severe fighting a few miles from Bokhara.
17. Kilif, 24th August. —Rebel bands, including Turkomans from Afghanistan
are raiding about Chushka Guzar and Kara Kamar.
Tashkent.
18. Aitgust 23rd. —-Meetings are being held in the town, and at other places
along the railway, at which the people are told that Moscow has decreed that
every man must be a worker in Russia, and only those who worked and were
Communists would be clothed and fed.
Central Russia.
19. Samara, 17th August.—The arms and ammunition factory An East India Company trading post. is in full work
ing order and turning out a considerable quantity of material. It is reported
that aeroplane and wireless materials are being made in this factory An East India Company trading post. .
20. Further reports state that the revolutionary movement is growing at
Nijni Novgorod, and also that it has already spread across to Ufa.

They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
