Meshed Intelligence Diary No. 28 for the period ending 28th August 1922.
Local.
The Mir Lashkar returned to Meshed on the 27th August after having complet
ed his tour of the frontier.
Transcaspia.
2. Lutfabad, 18th August. —Turkomans in an attack on the Russians atTejend
succeeded in capturing a small gun, 2 machine guns, ammunition and stores.
3. A Russian officer deserted from the Tejend garrison and is now working as
machine gun officer to the rebels.
4. 150 troops with 2 guns have been sent from Askhabad to assist against
the rebels between Kizil Arvat and Krasnovodsk.
5. Persian Sarakhs, 24th August. —2 Russians disguised as Afghans reached
Persian Sarakhs from Pul-i-Khatum on the 21st August and proceeded to Russian
Sarakhs. It was subsequently ascertained from some Baluchis who accompanied
them from Pul-i-Khatum, that they were Russian spies and had entered Afghanistan
north of Mazar-i-Sharif. They talked to the Baluchis of the large forces the Afghans
had collected on the frontier, and of the recruiting being done by the Afghans.
6. Reference Diary No 27, paragraph 2. 3 Russian officers with 7 soldiers
arrived at Russian Sarakhs on the 20th August from Askhabad, to hold an enquiry
as to why Karim Khan and his followers were allowed to desert into Persia.
7. Merv, 15th August.—ZW men of the 3rd Kazan Regiment, commanded
by a Jew, passed through from Tashkent for Kushk. They were armed and well
clothed, but looked physically unfit. From the statements of some of these troops,
all had been enlisted by force.
8. A Russian officer who was attached to the Turkoman Regiment at Tejend
has been arrested at Merv, and charged with not resisting the attacks of the Turko
man rebels, who carried off arms and ammunition from Tejend {vide paragraph 2).
9. A Turkoman regiment formed in Askhabad 2 years ago and sent to Central
Russia, has returned to Turkistan and is at present located at Merv.
10. Trains which arrived at Merv from Tashkent between the 11th and 14th
August, brought 550 Russian troops, a number of horses, 2 large guns, 1 armoured
car and supplies for Kushk.
Bokhara.
11. August 12th. —The Russians have handed some of the minor civil appoint
ments back to the Young Bokharans, but the chief appointments are being retained
by Russians.
12. The rebels who had approached Bokhara in early July have been badly
defeated and forced to retire to Nur Ata, leaving many dead ; the bodies are still
unburied. Rebels were without guns and machine guns, and many were only
armed with swords and sticks.
13. Owing to the capture of a rebel messenger by the Russians, the names of
many persons were disclosed who assisted the rebels with reports from Bokhara,
and had promised arms and ammunition. 16 persons were arrested, and all shot,
with the exception of Astana Kul, Kush Begi, who proved his innocence. A num
ber of other suspects have been arrested.
14. Faizullah Khoja has gone to Moscow to attend a Conference, and Mirza
Salim Beg is officiating as Governor of Bokhara.
15. Kagan, 12th August. —The Russians announced on the 10th August that
they had defeated the rebel forces of Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. , and had occupied Baisun.
