16. Guzar, 15th August—It is reported that the Russians have driven the rebels-
back, and have occupied Derbent. Fighting was very heavy, especially a t
Chashma Hazifan, where both sides suffered maj casualties. The reporter states
that it is thought that the retreat of the rebels was according to plan, and that they
hoped to be able to cut off a large force of the Russians from the railway, in order
to augment their supply of arms and ammunition.

18. Yakkabag, 10th August. —The rebels from Shahr-i-Sabz area are attacking
between Shahr-i-Sabz and Yakkabag. This latter town has been entered several
times by the rebels, but so far they have not been able to hold it. The rebels have
abundant supplies, but are not well armed.
19. Kermineh, 13th August. —Rebels captured Khatirchi on the 10th, but were
driven out again on the 12th August.

in reality working for the Russians. They go so far afs to say that Enver has
already been exposed by the rebels and has been arrested.
Samarkand.
21. Notices have been spread in the town threatening the Russians that unless
' they do not fulfiyi their early promises of freedom to the people, and cease making
war, they will be punished, as God will see that justice is given. The notice further
states that the people of Turkistan called Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. to help them.,, and that he
was not sent by the British.
22. Katta Kurghan, 9th August. —Rebels are active along the railway line, and
control all villages off the line, from which they are collecting the revenue.
Ferghana.
23. It is reported that the people of Ferghana suggested to the Tashkent
Government that Ferghana should be given its independence under Enver Pasha An Ottoman title used after the names of certain provincial governors, high-ranking officials and military commanders. ,
and that the Russian troops should vacate Ferghana, when they promise to disperse
the rebels. This is apparently an answer to a Russian proposal that Ferghana
should become a republic under the “ Guardianship of the Soviet Government.”
