13. Persian SaraBs, 10th August.-On arrival of the Persian troops from
Meshed mentioned in paragraph 1 of last week s diary, Kanm Khan reported to
the Russians at Russian Sarakhs that these troops had been sent to arrest
him. ^ •
14 Karim Khan has been supplied by the Russians with 300 rifles, 2
machine guns and a cart load of ammunition. His headquarters are at Nauruz-
abad.
15 Turkomans report that Haji Quli has gone towards Kushk with his
followers, in response to a summons from Afghanistan.
16. Merv, 31st Jh%.—The mail train from Tashkent brought a Tartar named
Mullah* Shams-ud-din, and 2 Russian companions. They proceeded to Kushk.
It was said that the Mullah had been sent from Tashkent, and was bound for
Herat to discuss some matter with the Afghans, provided he could obtain per
mission to enter Afghanistan.
17. 300 Tartars without arms passed from Bokhara going to Krasnovodsk.
Thev were being returned to their country as the Russians thought they would
desert to the rebels. Some of these Tartars stated that many of the Russian
troops did not want to fight, but were forced to do so to obtain food.
18. Takhta Bazar, 1st August— It is reported from this toivn that the Russians
/ agreed 6 weeks ago to hand over Panjdeh to the Afghans, but since that date
| have been increasing the number of their troops along the frontier, and have every
! intention of attacking Afghanistan instead. The Russians blame the Afghans
for the trouble they are having with the rebels, and state that the Afghans are
I intriguing with the rebels against Russia.
19. Turkomans of Merv, Bairam Ali, Takhta Bazar and Kushk are said to he
anxiously awaiting the commencement of hostilities between Russia and
Afghanistan, when they will throw in their lot with the latter.
Bokhara.
20. Reference Diary No. 19, paragraph 8. Kameneff is reported to have
arrived’ at Bokhara (Kagan) on the 2nd August, and to have issued orders for the
offensive on all fronts against the rebels.
21. Mohammad Taqi Bey (vide Diary No. 16, paragraph 18) states that he
I has just heard from Bokhara that 2 of the sons of the ex-Amir, who were unable
to escape with the ex-Amir, have been executed by the Russians.
22. From various reports it appears that the rebels are using their ammuni
tion carefully, but it is not known whether this is caused by a shortage, or is being
done according to instructions, which are said to be to entice the Russians towards
Baisun and away from the railway line.
23. Karshi, 25th July. —Work on the Karshi-Kirki railway line has been
re-commenced at Sangi Suliak.
24. Rebels are increasing in numbers, but there are not sufficient arms for
them. Shovels, picks and such like weapons are carried by many in place of
rifles.
25. Guzar, 28th July. —The rebels entered Guzar on the 13th July but were
quickly driven out. Fighting lasted close to Guzar for 3 days, when the rebels
were forced back to Chashma Hazifar, where fighting is still in progress.
26. It is reported that the Russians succeeded in driving the rebels from
Shahr-i-Sabz, but the success was only temporary, as the rebels again occupy the
town. . '
27. Termez, 25th July. —The Russians have pushed the rebels back through
Shirabad and Liallikin, and are fighting at present between the latter place
and Chilyanzur. Russians have about 5,000 troops engaged in this area, and
reinforcements are being sent from Termez and Kilif.
28. 2,500 Russians are engaged against another band of rebels near Khatin
Robat, east of Termez.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
