29. Turkoman bands are operating at Chushka Guzar and Chakish. They
sacked the bazaar at Chakish. and on the 23rd July the Kussian post at Shurab
was attacked, and the defenders who could not escape were killed. These Turko
mans retire into Afghanistan when Russian troops are sent against them.
30. It is rumoured that the ex-Amir has arrived in Bokhara through Khana-
f bad (Afghanistan).
31. There is an Afghan representative with '4 soldiers at Termez. No one
is allowed to go to Mazar-i-Sharif without a permit from the Afghan Consul at
Tashkent or Moscow. - —j
32. The Russian Consul at Mazar-i-Sharif has been ordered by the Afghans j
to cease propaganda. . -1
33. Afghans are enlisting recruits in great haste. The frontier force at
Hazara Taqi has been increased to 1,000.
34. Termez is dependent on supplies from Charjui, as the rebels have
collected and carried off everything in the vicinity. Nothing is being received
from Afghanistan.
35. Kabadian, 24th July. —Rebels east of Termez in the Khatin Robat
area number 20,000 and are led by Ali Beg Effendi {vide Diary No. 18, para
graph 13). They are armed with rifles of Russian, Afghan and British manufac
ture, and have 5 small guns, which are commanded by an ex-Russian officer,
Talminoff.
36. The Commander-in-Chief (name not given) to the ex-Amir is at Hissar,
and is acting as Amir, with Surrayya Effendi {vide Apppendix II to Diary No. 16),

37. Supplies with the rebels are plentiful and the harvest, which is good,
is being collected. The rebels are trading with Afghanistan, and are said to be
receiving arms from that country.

39. The rebels are said to be endeavouring to attract a large number of
Bolshevik troops to Termez, and intend to attack and occupy the town in the
winter, when the Oxus is frozen.
40. Kermineh, 28th July. —Fierce fighting is reported east and west of
Kermineh. The rebels are said to have been defeated between Kermineh and
Katta Kurghan, and to have retired in the direction of Nur Ata. Fighting
commenced on the 16th July in the direction of Bokhara, and has been continuous
since that date.
Tashkent.
41. 28th July. —Some German merchants have arrived at Tashkent, and
they expect their goods to arrive shortly, which will be sent to Persia and y
Afghanistan.
42. Recruits from Ferghana, Bokhara and Khiva are trained and then sent
to Central Russia. Troops from Russia are sent to each of the above mentioned
provinces.
43. Newspapers publish notices calling on the people to send their goods to |
the Nijni Novgorod Fair, but with no result. The owners prefer to keep hidden I
their possessions.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
