met a Turkoman who was carrying despatches to Enver from the Turkomans of the
Askhabad District. Rebels from Ferghana were arriving at Hissar in batches
to join Enver’s forces.
15. Bokhara, 7th /^.—Reference Diary No. 18, paragraph 30. The Afghan
Consul is reported to be still in Bokhara, but practically under guard. A letter j j |
from the ex-Amir to the Consul is said to have been intercepted by the Russians.
The Consul wanted to return to Afghanistan with the other Afghan subjects, who
left when the Russians took over the Government from the Young Bokharans, but
was not allowed to do so.
16. Reference Diary No. 20, paragraph 26. Mirza Salim Beg has returned from
Moscow. It is generally given out that Faizullah Khoja, who is governing Bokhara
under the Russians, has gone to Tashkent, in connection with the opening of the
Makara (Nijni Novgorod) fair. Other reports are to the effect that he has been
relieved of his office, the direct administration having been assumed by the Bolshe
viks.
17. Kagan, 10th July. —10,000 of the Russian troops collected at Kagan
have been sent to Karshi and Khiva. The garrison now stands at 5,000. The
Russians threaten to destroy Bokhara City by bombardment, if they are unable to
hold it against the rebels who surround the city. Many of the inhabitants are
fleeing from the city.
18. Kermineh, 5th July. —On the 20th June, the Nur Ata rebels drove 1,500
Russians from near Babkan (Arbkhan), and occupied this fort. Russian reinforce
ments were brought up from Kagan and Katta Kurghan and the rebels were driven
out of Babkan to the Nur Ata Mountains, the Russian force remaining at Babkan.
Fekghana.
19. Khojent, 10th July. —Refugees arriving form Andijan and Marghilan tell
of heavy fighting at both these places.
20. The rebels have distributed their forces over the whole of Ferghana, in
order that the Russians, who are considerably increasing their numbers, will find
it more difficult to deal with them.
21. Rebels who were operating about Khojent joined those of Marghilan, and
a new band has now been formed at the former place, under the leadership of Yagam
Yerdi, who deserted from the Russians six weeks ago. This band is working near
the railway line between Khojent and Cherniyevo.
Central Russia.
22. Perovsk. —An arrival from this town, who left there on the 5th July, states
that the Russians say they will attack their neighbours if Russia is not recognized
as a Power at the Hague Conference. He also states that Lenin died two months
ago, but his death is being kept secret until after the Conference.
