Intelligence Diary No. 24, for the
period ending the 31st July 1922.
Local.
1. 200 Infantry, 100 Cavalry with 3 Maxim guns left Meshed for Persian
Sarakhs on the 31st July.
Afghanistan.
2. A Turkoman arrival from Chah Yakli (west of Kushk near the Perso- Afghan
Frontier) states that there are 4,000 Afghan Cavalry at this place. On the 16th
July a large amount of ammunition was handed over to Turkomans belonging to
Haji Quli’s band, who left the same day going north to join Haji Quli.
3. An arrival from Hasht reports the following :—
(i) Six Colonels have been ordered to recruit one infantry regiment each.
(n) Three thousand men have been recruited in the Herat District under
the “ Hasht Nafari ” system.
(in) An Infantry Regiment has arrived at Herat from Kabul.
(iv) At Balkh there are 36 Infantry Regiments of 600 men each.
(v) At Shaikh Junaid there are 3 Infantry Regiments and 2 guns.
(vi) At Murghab, one Infantry Reigment and one gun.
(vii) Between Shaikh Junaid and Murghab, one Cavalry Regiment on patrol
work.

4. Reference Diary No. 23, paragraph 6. A later report from Lutfabad
states that the 1,200 troops of the 3rd Kiev Army mentioned in this paragraph,
proceeded to Bokhara and not Kushk.
5. Askhabad, 20th July. —Sickness (typhus) has decresed since the evacuation
of refugees, and the quarantine has been raised.
6. The majority of troops sent through from Krasnovodsk during the past
2 months are said to be from Astrakhan. A similar report comes from Tejend.
7. Persian SaraJchs, 27th July. —During the past week Haji Quli’s band has
had two encounters with the Russians. In the first the Turkomans managed to
lead 200 Jamshaldis (Russian subjects) into an ambush ready for them in a pass,
where they massacred the lot. The second encounter was at a place a day’s march
from Tejend on the 22nd July. Two hundred of Haji Quli’s men surprised a force
of 300 Russians from Merv, who were in camp for the night. The Russians fled
at the commencement of firing, leaving 3 machine guns, 12 boxes of ammunition,
many rifles and horses.
8. The Russian Commander at Tejend has asked for 4,000 troops to round
up this band of Turkomans. *
f 9. Two Ottoman Turks in Turkoman dress arrived at Sarakhs from Tejend on
the 22nd July. With the aid of a Baluch guide they left secretly next day for
| Herat via Zulfikar.
10. Merv, 21st July. —Two hundred refugees from Tashkent en route for Persia
were detained at Merv, and have not been allowed to proceed further.
Khiva.
11. Petro Alexandrovsk, 16th July. —Fighting continues between Urgench
and Khiva, to which front the Russians are sending reinforcements. It is reported
by the Russians that the Yamuts are running short of ammunition. The reporter
