states that Junaid Khan is purchasing rifles and ammunition from Turkomans
in the Askhabad District, and paying for his purchases in gold and silver. The
Yamuts are better clothed and fed than the Russians, whose supplies are brougk
from Charjui, and are uncertain.
12. Fighting is reported at Uch Khadaq, near the Bokharan frontier.
Bokhara.
13. Arrivals at Lutfabad on the 21st July report heavy fighting between
Katta Kurghan and Kermineh.
14. An arrival from Samara states that his train was held up for 24 hours at
Kermineh about the 16th July, owing to the rebels having wrecked a train near
Kizil Teppe Station. The Russians on the wrecked train were killed and the
military stores and merchandise carried off by the rebels. The bodies of the
Russians killed were brought into Kagan on the train by which reporter travelled.
15. Karakul, 16th July. —The rebels have returned from the Khivan frontier
and are attacking the Russian posts.
16. Bokhara, 17th July. —Rebels from Nur Ata, under the leadership of Hasan
Effendi attacked the Russian posts near the city on the 7th July. On the 9th July
Russian troops with 12 armoured cars from Kagan were sent against them, and
the rebels were driven back 8 miles from around Bokhara after 3 days’ fighting.
Many were killed on both sides.
17. Karshi, llth July. —Shahr-i-Sabz is said to have been occupied by the
rebels on the 9th July. The rebels are also close to Guzar, where heavy fighting
is in progress.
18. Reference Diary-No. 22, paragraph 17. Russian deserters to the’ rebels
are disarmed and sent to Eastern Bokhara, asjdie rebels fear trickery on the part
of the Russians.
19. Large supplies of wood and iron are arriving at Karshi for the Karshi-
Kirki railway line.
20. Kirki, 14th July. —It is reported that the rebels are again attacking
Termez. Russian troops are still being sent towards Kilif, both by river and the
land route.
Tashkent.
21. 11th July. —Russians between the ages of 18 and 35, and Muhammadans
from 16 to 40 are being enlisted. The Russians state that they will have an army
of 2-|- millions by the 1st August 1922.
22. An anti-Communist party has been formed at Tashkent, and is already
becoming a powerful body. Notices threatening the Communists for their treat
ment of the poor are issued at night. Reporter states that similar parties are being
formed in all parts of Russia.
Ferghana.
23. Reports from Khokand (15th July) and Marghilan (10th July) say that
it is consistently rumoured that Namangan was occupied by the rebels on the 5th
July, and that they were advancing on Shahkand. Andijan is also rumoured to
be in the possession of the rebels.
