and Kagan. At Hasan 1,000 with 1 gun and 1 machine gun.
Kirki, 14'h July. 4,400 Infantry, 600 Cavalry; mostly Muhammadans. 12 guns, 8 ma
chine guns, 2 armoured cars, 2 planes. At Andkhui 500 and 2 machine guns, Bosaga 600
and 2 machine guns, Kizil Ayak 150, Kirkircha 200 and 2 machine guns, Imam Jaffa 200
and 1 machine gun.
Tashkent, 11th July. 12,000 mixed Cavalry and Infantry and including many recruits
who are mostly Muhammadans. Old soldiers are mixed Russians and Muhammadans. Military
camp is 4 miles from the town. 15 guns, 12 machine guns, 3 armoured cars, 2 planes.
Khokand, loth July. —3,800 Infantry, 1,200 Cavalry ; mostly Muhammadans. Garrison has
been diminished to provide troops for Andijan and Marghilan. 9 guns, 8 machine guns,
2 armoured ears, 3 planes.
Marghilan, 10th July.—5,^>00 Infantry, 2,200 Cavalry, mixed Russians and Muhammadans.
Regiments are 1st Kagan, 9th Cherniyevo (Commander Stepan Marolin), 7th Semirechia and one
other. 18 guns, 14 machine guns, 3 armoured cars, 3 planes. 2,000 of the force are at Old
Marghilan, 12 miles from the new town.

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
