Bolsheviks they could find; inhabitants were not molested, and the rebels
decamped after completing their work. Russians have now increased their
garrison from 800 to 1,500.
26. Karshi. 12th June. — Russians claim to have driven the rebels from
Chashma Hazifan {vide Diary No. 18, paragraph 14) and Darband back to Baisun.
27. Kirki. 8th June .—The river and land routes to Termez are still open.
Four extra ships have recently arrived on the river, and are said to have been
brought from the Volga. Infantry, arms and ammunition are being despatched
daily by river, and cavalry are sent by the land route.
28. Rebels are constantly hampering the river traffic. On the 3rd June they
attacked two ships in the river at Kirki, killing the sailors and carrying off what
they could of the supplies loaded on the ships.
29. Reference Diary No. 17, paragraph 17. The Afghans are aware of the
Russians sending in Persians and Caucasians as spies, and are now preventing
suspects from crossing the frontier.
30. Lutfabad reports that on the 18th June 53 wounded from Kirki passed
going to Askhabad. They stated that heavy fighting is going on near Kirki and
that 800 rebels have already been killed. They admit that 200 Russians were
killed in the fighting.
Samarkand.
31. Katta Kurghan. 7th June. —20,000 Russian troops passed from Samar
kand to Kagan during the past 10 days.
32. On the 4th June the rebels under Mirza Mohsin attacked Zera Bulak station
killing some and disarming the remainder of the Russian guards. They then
removed the railway line. The Russians immediately sent a force against the
rebels driving them towards Nnr Ata.
33. Hasan Effendi [vide Diary No. 17, paragraph 14) is said to have arrived to
command this band of rebels.
Tashkent.
34. Reference Diary No.' 17, paragraph 24. The officials appointed to replace
the Jew Communists are officials of the late Tsar’s time and they have considerably
improved the conditions from the point of view of the people. The new officials
made about 20 arrests of persons suspected of hoarding during^the Jewish reign.
Their houses were searched and much gold and looted property found.
Ferghana.
35. Khokand. 10th June. —Russian supplies are very low and have to be
brought from Tashkent, as there has not been any cultivation since the beginning
of the revolution.
36. Fierce fighting is reported near Marghilan and Andijan, and fresh troops are
arriving daily for both these fronts. The rebels again entered Marghilan on the
5th June, but were soon driven out by the Russians who captured 50 prisoners.
Shahkand was also occupied by the rebels, but the Russians turned them out after
three days’ occupation.
37. Wounded are arriving daily from both fronts, and are sent through to
Tashkent, as the hospital at Khokand is full.
38. Russians are experiencing great trouble with the Muhammadan troops who
refuse to fight and desert to the rebels. Whole regiments have had to be withdrawn
from Ferghana, and Communist troops sent to replace them.
