13. Reference Diary No. 17, paragraph 3. Haji Quli and his men have moved
down to Russian Sarakhs. They attacked two Russian posts between Teiend
and Russian Sarakhs, and killed the detachments of 12 in each post. This ban ]
is at present around Russian Sarakhs, and Haji Quli has warned the Persian
in the town to leave for Persian Sarakhs, as he intends to attack. The road fro/
Russian Sarakhs to Tejend has been closed by Haji Quli’s men.
14. Kizil Arvat. 10th June .—The Russians have armed and sent during the
past month over 200 Turkomans to assist the Yamuts at Gumbad-i-Kabus
Propagandists are sent both from Kizil Arvat and Krasnovodsk to this and the
Astarabad areas, to work on the feelings of the Yamuts against the Persian Gov
ernment.
15. The railway repair shops have repaired 25 engines and 75 wagons during
the past 4 months. Motor, and repairs to military equipments are also carried
out at the shops.
16. A notice was issued requesting the workmen to give part of their food
allowance for the hungry in the Caucasus and Crimea. Subsequently the rations
of the workmen were reduced.
17. Askhabad. 12th June. —Reported that Kurds from Bujnurd and
Kuchan attacked Russians at Firuza at the beginning of June. The Russians
retreated from Firuza towards Askhabad, and the Kurds carried off some rifles
and a considerable amount of ammunition. The Russian garrison at Firuza
has now been increased (vide paragraph 10).
^ Jwne.—Garrison has been increased to 6,000 all of whom
are m the forts. Outside posts have not been increased to any extent, and the
number in the forts is kept as secret as possible. A powerful searchlight plays

19. Supplies are sufficient for 3 months, and have been mostly brought from
Merv. Camels are being collected and kept at Kushk.

included amongst them is a platoon of Barbaris from Herat. The latter inform
ation was reported by the Russian frontier official to the authorities at Kushk.
Khiva.

22. The Yarnuts are reported to have occupied Khiva at the end of May,
after two weeks fighting. Fighting continues between Khiva and Khanki, aid
the Russian have asked urgently for reinforcements from Charjui.
