Meshed Intelligence Diary No. 12, for the week ending 8th May 1922.
Tkanscaspia.
1. Askhabad. April 22nd. —It is stated that the Azerbaijan Government
still refuse to trade kerosine except for wheat and barley.
2. May 1st. —A detachment of 200 men left for Khiva, and on the way were
attached by Junaid Khan’s men, and defeated after 24 hours’ fighting. Some of
the detachment were killed and the remainder returned to Askhabad. The raid
ers carried off the stores, arms and ammunition.
3. Kaakha. May 1st. —Confirmed reports state that the garrison is being
considerably increased, owing to the trouble caused by the rebels.
4. Sarakhs. May 3rd. The Bolsheviks are still forcibly recruiting the
Turkomans and commandeering their horses. They are also demanding sheep and
cows.
Bokhara.
5. Bokhara. April 23rd. —In the latter part of March, Enver

Effendi, Ismail Effendi, Kazim Effendi and Hussain Effendi.

6. Totosheff succeeded Hasan Efiendi as Commander-in-Chief of the Young
Bokharan troops.
7. Martial law was proclaimed, and no one allowed out of the houses after
6 P.M.
8. The rebels in the Bokharan Province are said to exceed 20,000, divided into
3 bands ; one at Baisun, one at Termez and the third at Shahr-i-Sabz.

Ghani, Tokhta Bai, Yaldash Khwaja and Osman Khwaja.
10. Afghans with officers are amongst the rebels, and also the 300 sowars
who accompanied the ea>Amir to Afghanistan.
11. The object of the rebels is to occupy the whole of Bokhara, and re-establish
the ea;-Amir, and it is commonly said that the Amir of Afghanistan is a party to
this.
12. The rebels at present occupy the most important towns and villages east of
the line Shahr-i-Sabz-Baisun-Termez. The latter town is besieged.
13. Food supplies, arms and ammunition plentiful with the rebels, but there is
a shortage of food with the Bolsheviks, which causes many of their troops to desert
td the rebels.
14. The Bolsheviks have asked for 20,000 reinforcements. These are coming
in gradually via Tashkent.
15. Guzar. April 24th. —The railway line from Guzar to Karshi is not working,
but the line from Kagan to Karshi is working.
- 16. Two hundred and fifty Young Bokharan troops deserted with arms to the
rebels. The rebels are in force about Shahri-Sabz, and the Bolsheviks are sending
reinforcements to Guzar for the Shahr-i-Sabz area. (/See also paragraph 14.)

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
