17. Rebels looted and carried off stores wbicb were being brought from Bokhara
to Guzar.
18. Kermineh. April 24th.—Food conditions bad, as town has been twice
sacked by the rebels, who burn what they cannot carry away.
19. Rebels in this area are under Mirza Mohsin, who was an official of the ^
ez-Amir of Bokhara. Mirza Mohsin and 300 followers have joined Muhi-ud-din
Maqsum.
20. This reporter states that unless the rebels are defeated within 3 months
the whole of the Young Bokharan troops will join them.
21. The government of Kermineh is in the hands of the Young Bokharans
and the Governor is Jan Murad Bai.
Samarkand.
22. Samarkand. April 22nd. —Trenches have been dug round the town to
keep off the rebels, who continually attack at night, and retreat to the hills in tie
daytime, making it extremely difficult for the Bolsheviks to deal with them.
23. Russians and Sarts are deserting to the rebels with arms. Two hundred
said to have gone over in a month.
24. Newspapers state that a treaty has been signed between Russia and Ger
many, and therefore Russia must be prepared for the defensive, in case otker
Powers should come against them. This is used as an excuse for enlistment.
A similar communique was punished at Chinaz.
25. Chinaz. April 16th. —In addition to a military school, there is one for
children. Education for children is compulsory, and they are allowed to i
their parents once in every 10 days.
26. Food is scarce, and is likely to be worse as the props have been destroyei
by the flood waters from the river Sir.
27. Rebels attack and plunder the villages in the vicinity of Chinaz. They
are led by Beg Tash.
Tashkent.
28. (Reference Diary No. 11, paragraph 20.) Budyonie has been given definite
orders to organize the army and defeat the rebels, also that he must act quickly
as the rebels are increasing in strength rapidly. Budyonie has ordered the enlist
ment of all men between the ages of 20 and 35.

30. Schools. —At the Wireless school there are a number of Afghan students.
At the Propaganda, school there are about 50 Indian students.
31. (Reference Diary No. 9, paragraph 7.) To quell the disturbance amongst
the railway workmen, military officers were sent who informed the strikers that
Soviet representatives had been sent to the Genoa Conference for them, and that if
they went back to work, all would go well with them. A number of the strikers
were given new clothing.
32. Wireless reports are issued daily and state that Russia has been, recog
nized by all the T owers, and is being successful in all her aims.
33. An anti-Ccmmunist party has been formed secretly, and it issues notices
at night saying no further fighting is wanted, and how much longer are the people
to be deceived.

33-A. Attacks on the Bolshevik inhabitants of the towns and villages in the
Ferghana Province are being continued by the rebels. Rebels take many prisoners
who are offered service with the rebel forces, and failing acceptance are sent to the

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
