Samarkand.
16. The Basmachis have scattered Manifestos in Samarkand offering food to
all the famine stricken who join them.
Ferghana.
17. Marghillan was captured by the rebels about 15th March, after which
severe fighting occurred in the direction of Kokand, where the oil wells have been
much damaged by fire. In this area 2,500 troops with 4 machine guns are said to
have gone over to the Basmachis between March 1st and March 20th.
Tashkent.
Place.
18. The disturbance at Tashkent referred to in Summary No. 7 appears to have
been caused by the desertion en masse of the 14th Uzbek Regiment, who went off
with several machine guns and all the ammunition they could seize, besides a number
of stolen horses. Four Russian officers went with etre: .
19. The Railway north of Tashkent is said to have been cut several times.

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
