IB. A consignment of propaganda literature accompanying three travellers
from Russia was seized recently by the Persian Customs authorities at
Bajgiran.
14 The amount of anti-British literature (non-Russian) coming into
Meshed is sufficient to engage a whole time translation bureau. The following
are among those examples that have come to hand and it is not claimed that
the list is an exhaustive one :—
(i) Azadi-i-Sharq.—¥vmtz& in Berlin in five languages-—Prench,
German, Arabic, Turkish, Persian, and Urdu. Contains anti-
British matter in Urdu.
{ii) Mehr-o-Munir—A. Meshed publication. In the current issue
appeared, translated into Persian, the Urdu verses, also Urdu
prose, published by the above German paper. The editor is
a Kashmiri who has abjured his status of British subject.
(in) Lewa-us-lslam .—Two copies of different dates. These contained
anti-British matter and were sold in Meshed at four shais
(about one penny) a copy.
(iv) Haqiqat .—Copies 1 and 4. A Communist and anti-British Persian
paper published in Tehran. It is distributed in Meshed by
the Meshed Revolutionary Committee.
(«) Persian Communists] Buies .—A pamphlet issued by the Persian
section of the III International and published, possibly, in
Baku but this is. not certain.
CIS-PRONTIER.
There is a dearth of information, due to the wintry weather which is
holding up the postal couriers and lessening the number of arrivals in Meshed.
15. JBandargaz .—No report.
16. JBujnurd. — January 24th.
The correspondent writes to say there is nothing to report.
17. Bujgiran .—January 20th.
Ghulam Mehdi, chemist, of Meshed, arrived here after his expulsion
from Meshed. He has been refused permission by the Persian Customs
authorities to take food supplies with him into Russia. He has made a
reference on the subject to Meshed—probably to the Bolshevik Consul—and is
awaiting the result.
18. It might be remarked here, in parenthesis, that not even the most
ardent Bolshevik or red hot Communist is anxious to return to the rigours of
life in Russia once he has succeeded in finding asylum in Persia where food
is plentiful. A credible authority has stated that the Russian Consul-General
has recently remarked to his friends that should the Soviet Government recall
him to Russia he would refuse to go.
19. On the 2nd of December last three men, a Russian, Kano Petrov, a
Georgian, Amiraku, and a Turk, Meshedi Abdul Baqi (see Intelligence
Summary 3, paragraph 21) arrived in Bajgiran from Russia. Their effects were
searched by the Customs and two revolvers and about 15 pounds weight of
propaganda literature were found. The literature consisted of pamphlets
entitled “ An address to the Workmen and Peasants of Persia ”. The men
were forwarded to Meshed but arrived back at Bajgiran on the 20th instant,
having been expelled from Persian limits.
20. QwcAttw.-—23rd January 1922.
Recruits are being enlisted for the Khorasan Division Sixty-five were
secured and despatched to Meshed.
21. A notice from the Minister of War has been published bidding citi-
zenes to contribute wheat and money to the assistance of the Russian famine-
About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
