APPENDIX I.
BOLSHEVIK GARRISONS.
Krasnovodsk, 8th January 1922.— majority Russians^ including
60 mounted. Unit reported as 9th Kazan.
Askhabad, 9th and 18th January 1922. —Not over 1,000 including some
companies of a Turkestan regiment, number not stated. Miscellaneous
“ Otryadi ” e.g., Frontier Regiment—Pekhotnii Okhranii Otryad, probably
Militia—an otryad of troops of the Extraordinary Commission. About
300 sowars of Turkmen Cavalry. One regiment, of sappers, probably a
weak company at most. ; 6 field guns. No heavy artillery. No armoured
cars. (By Armenian correspondent in A’abad).
Gaudan Post, 13th January 1922. —25, both mounted and dismounted
of 2nd Battalion, 1st Frontier Regiment.
Kagan, 2nd January 1922'. —1,500, majority Russians and including
200 mounted. These troops are dressed as Young Bokharan troops. State
ment difficult to accept.
Samarqand, 2nd January 1922. —1,500 jvith 300 mounted inclusive.
Majority Muslims, 11 guns. 1 armoured car. 500 troops escorted by an
armoured engine and wagon sent to Bokhara on 30th December. Command
ant of Samarqand, Kushinov. Governor, Shamsuddinov.
Chernycevo, 10th January 1922. —350, majority Russians of 3rd Cher-
nyaevski, including 75 mounted, 4 guns including one on Timurlang Tappe,
2 motor lorries, 1 aeroplane.
Karki, 5th January 1922. —1,000, including 300 mounted. Units : 350
of 4th New Bokharan, 650 of 11th Samara. Of this total, 40 are at Zeid,
80 at Bosaqa, 20 at Kizil Ayaq, 50 with 1 gun and 1 machine gun at
Karkicha.
Kavadian, date recent. —350, majority Muslims, including 200 mounted,
2 small guns, 2 machine guns..
Term.ez, 3rd January 1922. —1,500, including 900 Bolshevik and 600
Young Bokharan troops. Total includes 500 mounted of Frontier Cavalry
(probably Amu Darya). 150 of these are on patrol from Termez to Kilif,
100 to Takhta Kabad, and 50 are in Salwat. Commander of Frontier

Tashkent, ~27th December 1921 .— 4,500, including 300 mounted only
owing to men having eaten their horses. Units given as 6th and 7th Turkes
tan and 2nd Aral. Concordant details not yet received but another witness,
a deserter from 6th Turkestan testifies to that unit being present.
Margilan, 2nd January 1922. —Formally 1,500 but recently augmented
by fresh arrivals to 3,500. 9 guns, 2 armoured cars, 6 lorries, 2 aeroplanes,
1 armoured train with 3 armoured wagons and 10 coaches for conveyance of
troops.
Andijan, 3rd January 1922. —Recently augmented to 3,000, majority
Muslims, 9 guns, 1 armoured car, 2 lorries.
