Britain’s reply to Mother India.
It is very difficult for us to leave a country of which we have gained
possession after hundreds of years of effort.
Even though we leave you and depart to Europe we fear lest the Afghans
and the Japanese should possess you.
Reply of Mother India.
Our fate, whatever it be, is foredoomed. You had better go. Oh,.
Sirs, why are you so anxious for me? I will not remain in bondage. All
the world knows I am as one possessed in my desire for freedom.
That time has passed when I was at the beck and call of everv one.
Do not think that I am still that Rani of India of days gone by. “What
matters it to me if one be a Russian or a Persian so ong as he is my well
wisher ? For being that shall I be grateful to him.
Some have guns, bayonets, rifles. Some are advanced in science. Some
are proud of their wealth. We have nothing, save only the weapon of the
soul.
The above is from the newspaper “ Siyasat”. Its purport stirs one
to the soul.
We congratulate our Indian brothers on such thoughts of freedom and
on their yearning to be free. Long live freedom ! Long live independence !
Long live Hindu-Muslim unity!
Our hopes of success continue to flourish.
HAFIZ FARAT NAGINIVI.
Note .—The above paper, “ Azadi-i-Sharq, ” is issued in several languages. That impres
sion from which the above was extracted was in French, German, Arabic, Turkish, and
Urdu. The latter extract was in Urdu and has appeared translated into Persian in the
current issue of the Meshed paper “ Mehr-i-Munir, ” the editor of which is a Kashmiri.

About this item

Content

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
