The military forces in Meshed continue to be reduced, 200 Cossschs and
converted gendarmes having left on the 17th for Teheran. Three hundred
gendarmes with two machine guns marched for Astarabad on the 19th.
Colonel Ali Khan who was commanding the Gendarmerie in Khorasan,
returned to Teheran on the 19th.
All military guards on institutions, public buildings, etc., have been
removed and police substituted where necessary.
The Commandant of the Persian Cossack contingent in Meshed, Hussein
Aqa Mir Panj, was asked in an interview how many troops were in Meshed.
Hisansuer was characteristic of the weakness for hyperbole in the Persian.
“ Three thousand had left”, he said, “and two thousand remain It is
possible there have not been 5,000 troops in Meshed since the last war
between Persia and Afghanistan. The figures would be nearer accuracy at

there will be weekly dances at the Russian Consulate.
Aonlieants for passports to Russia are being kept waiting, pending certain

There is every reason to believe that anti-British action, originating in
the Russian Consulate-General, is afoot in Meshed.
The dragoman, Aqa Muhammad Aliov, appears for the present to he

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
