The Commander of the 13th Japanese Division who conducted the Court-
Martial and disarming of the Russian army in the pre-maritime province from
the 4th to the 5th April 1920, in reply to the noise made in the whole Russian
press of the Far East on account of the disappearance of these people, swore on
his knightly honour that the Japanese army had not arrested any such people.
We have now received documentary evidence of the tragic doom of our
three heroic comrades. The Japanese transferred them from the building
where all arrested persons were lodged (No. 3 Poltavskaya) to the Japanese
barracks whence after three or four days—11th or 12th April—they
where taken to the station of Spassnoye Evgenevka and handed over
to a group of brigands. Our comrades were handed over to the
Whiteguards tied up in sacks. The brigands dragged the sacks on to a loco
motive drove away its attendants, and first of the three dragged Comrade
Lazo out of his sack. They wanted to push him into the furnace of the
locomotive but Lazo, who was possessed of great physical strength, fought with
them until they stunned him with the butt-end of a rifle. While unconscious
they stuffed him into the furnace. The rest of the comrades they shot while
still in their sacks and then consumed their bodies in the furnace.

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
