APPENDIX I.
BOLSHEVIK GARRISONS.
Transcaspia. —No change in the number of the troops in this area has
been recorded. A man who was present on parade at Askhabad during the
celebrations of the 4th anniversary of the Republic estimated the total num
ber present as 2,000, made up as enumerated on page iv of Russian press
supplement to last week’s Summary. To these should be added 3 field guns
and a contingent of women Communists under Ab-i-Hayat Khanum. The
“ aerial fleet ” consisted of the total number of aeroplanes present with the
Askhabad garrison, or two. The total garrison in the town itself does not
exceed 500.
The Merv garrison remains at about 400.
According to the testimony of a man who was butcher to the garrison
at Kushk, the garrison there consists of two “rot” of Military Extraordinary
.Commission, frontier troops, one field batter, and one squadron. The
total number of animals slaughtered per diem for these was three to five
sheep.
The garrisons of Russian Sarakhs and subsidiary posts remain the same.
Charjui, 9th November 1921. —1,200, majority Muslims and including
400 cavalry, 400 sailors, 5 guns, 1 aeroplane, 2 lorries.
Petroalexandrovsk, 10th November 1921.-2,500, majority Russians,
and including 1,000 newly arrived, 500 cavalry, 12 guns seen, 2 armoured
cars, 2 lorries, 3 aeroplanes.
Karki, 8th November 1921. —2,500, majority Russians. This garrison
has lately arrived in relief. 9th Samara. 2nd Kazan. 4th Novoi Bokhar-

Karshi, 6th November 1921. —1,000, majority Muslims and including
200 mounted. Unit: 3rd Young Bokharan under Hakimov. 2 guns. 1
armoured car. 2 motor lorries. 1 aeroplane. Wireless
Kokand, 9th November 1921. —3,400, majority Russians and including
750 mounted. Units : 1st Centre Regiment. Commanding Officer, Torbun.
2nd Kharkov, Commanding Officer, Eliniki, an Armenian. 3rd Samarkand,
Commanding Officer, Temeshkov, a Tatar. Each unit has 250 mounted
men. 12 guns. 'Armoured cars mounting two machine guns, 2. Aero-
plans, 2. Armoured railway wagons mounting 1 gun and 2 machine guns,
3, Information given by a man of 1st Centre Regiment.
Namangan, 7th November 1921. —1,500, majority Russians who have
replaced Muslims owing to the number of desertions among latter to the
rebels. Units: 16th Samara. 12th Orenburg Cossack Cavalry. 7th
Farghana. 6 guns. 2 armoured cars.
Andijan, 4th November 1921. —3,000, majority Muslims and including
500 cavalry. Units not identified. 1 battery. 2 armoured cars.
Tashkent, 7th November 1921. —The Commandant of the Tashkent
Garrison, A. Ivanov, published in the Tashkent “ Izvestia ” his orders for
the parade on the occasion of the 4th anniversary of the Republic. Unfor
tunately, he gives no details but mentions the infantry, cavalry, artillery,
automobile, aviation, instructional and training elements of the garrison.
He also refers to the “ communist battalion ” which is the first official ad
mission of the existence of a communist unit yet seen. The Commander
of the Turkfront was to be present but his identity was suppressed.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
