AFGHANISTAN.
Herat.— October 20th to November 3rd.
i Three Russians, believed to be messengers arrived from Chahildukh-
teran on the 28th, and two Russian messengers arrived from Kabul ma %
Hazarajat on the 31st. ,
ii The acting Bolshevik Consul told some people m a shop that India
had risen against the British Government and that the rebels had defeated
the Government troops, killing many. Indians wish to turn the British out
of their country and are adopting Bolshevism. He went on to say that
from the time that Bolshevik help had reached the Turks they had been doing
well and had recaptured many lost towns from the Greeks. Fighting was
now on Greek soil., The Greeks are appealing for peace but the Turks
do not accept their overtures. Moreover, they wish to drive the British
from their capital, Constantinople..
Hi. The messengers mentioned in para. 1 left for Russia and Kabul
respectively on the 2nd November.
iv. The Governor of Ghor sent 30 gold coins of treasure trove to the
Naib-ul-Hukumeh who sent them to the Amir.,
v. The 26 students whose arrival was reported last week are being look
ed after by one, Abdul Razaq Khan, who is secretary to Sher Ahmad Khan,
Afghan representative in Italy, and who is going to Italy ma Russia m
charge of these students. He has with him 2 captains, 1 artillery jemadar,
4 sepoys Term used in English to refer to an Indian infantryman. Carries some derogatory connotations as sometimes used as a means of othering and emphasising race, colour, origins, or rank. . 1 gunsmith, and 2 goldsmiths who understand the manufacture
of watches, luns, fuses, and bombs. A boy, the son of a big merchant,
accompanies the secretary. The craftsmen will go to Italy and the boy
intends to open up trade between Kabul and Italy., The 26 students will
go to Germany to complete their education.
n An officer of the rank of civil brigadier has arrived at the new
canal group of villages. All the headmen of villages will be under him
and he will be subordinate to the canal engineer.,
mi. A company of the Jadidi Herati regiment returned to Herat from
Kafir Gala on relief. The five companies of the Khaki and Ghazni
battalions which were in Kafir Qala have been re-disposed as lollows.
1 company of the Khaki battalion from Kafir Qala to Bala Murghah
1 company of the Khaki battalion from Kafir Qala to Chahildukh-
teran.
1 company of the Khaki battalion to remain in Kafir Qala.
1 companv of the Ghazni battalion from Kafir Qala to Bahan-i-
Zulfikar.
1 company of the Ghazni battalion remains in Kafir Qala.
mii. Under orders from the Naib Salar the 3rd Herati Regiment has
vacated its barracks and moved to the Kotwali battalion barracks. The
3rd Herati Regimental barracks are being renovated for conversion to a
school.
ix. The Naib Salar has ordered that the names of all sons of officers and
men should be sent him. These children will have to attend school and do
drill.
x. About 200 of the soldiers’ children, preceded by sons of the Naib
Salar, marched with music to the Chahr Bagh for inspection by the Naib-ui-
Hukumeh. The Naib Salar stated that these children would drill tor an
hour every morning before school.
xi The Naib-ul-Hukumeh with the Naib Salar, Qazis, Muftis, mili
tary officers, and Khawanin, performed the opening ceremony of the school
on the 3rd. It is to be called the “School of Nobility.” The heads of al
city quarters were ordered to send all children of their wards to school. A
cavalry adjutant and an artillery captain have been appointed patrons ot
the school.

The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
