members of the Majlis—to Haidar Khan via Bujnurd and Enzalli—to the
Bolsheviks in the matter of the purchase of arms, and so on.
The nine merchants of Turbat-i-Haidari who were brought to Meshed
under arrest—probably with the object of impressing the weight of his authority
/ upon distant communities—have been allowed to return home.
_ On the other hand Misbah Diwan, who was deputed by Shaukat-ul-Mulk,
Amir of Kain, to confer with Muhammad Taqi Khan, had not been allowed
to return.
The Meshed public is divided into two parties with respect to the British
interest in the present rebellion One party thinks the British Consulate-
General is supporting Muhammad Taqi Khan sub rosa, while the other party
is of opinion that the latter, having made his position strong by British early
sympathy and British guns, machine guns, rifles, and ammunition is now able
to disclose his true convictions which are anti-British.
Local Democrats, Moderates, the Ittahad-ul-Islam, and other associations
are busy discussing internal reforms and all are anti-British.
The most recent edition of the “Bahar” has indulged in very anti-
British articles and statements. That it pursues this policy unchecked is proof
that Muhammad Taqi Khan must share its views, even if he does not actually
inspire them.
Muhammad Taqi Khan has declared his intention of ridding Persian
administration of foreigners. He has commenced in Khorasan by dismissing
M. Bernardi, the Chief of the Excise Department, installing in his place one
Baha-i-Daftar.
Military .—The suspension of Persian intelligence work as a precautionary
measure has resulted in incomplete information. Such as has been collected

About this item

Content

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
