. The Labour Movement.
The “ Pioneer ” of the 15th July says there is a ferment among the
employes at Howrah station. This is directed against the existing system of
payment for work done whereby men have to work for three hours out of the
day without pay. It was decided to submit the matter to a certain inspector
but when the latter arrived in his motor car he was belaboured with fists and
struck with bricks. The interference of the police prevented further disorders.
Governmental Repressions.
The “ Independent ” of the 16th and 17th July again publishes an account
of universal arrests and of prosecution of a series of functionaries of the Indian
National Revolutionary Movement.
The national bard, Ramchandra Mung, was arrested in Mattra. He was
not allowed to submit the text of his songs nor to hand in a written
explanation. He did not call counsel and there was no cross-examina
tion. The accused w r as refused bail and was sentenced to a year’s hard labour.
The Court house was surrounded by police. Persistent rumours of fresh
arrests are abroad.
Babu Haribai Singh was sentenced to a year’s close and three months’
simple imprisonment. He was a propagandist of the town of Bally.
Eor delivering a speech in Calcutta inciting to rebellion, Salad Urakhman
and Ajodhaya Prasad were sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment. The
sentence was pronounced when accused were in prison and became known
only after some days at a demonstration on the part of partizans of the
Congress and Khalifat.
Maulana Ahmad Kujandi, a director of the Khalifat, was arrested in
Bombay. Though sick he was given a few annas for the purchase of food for
two days and despatched to Meerut.

(i) Text of the Bolshevik-Afghan Treaty.
(ii) A radical reorganization of the Afghan Government. —Particulars
regarding the Ministry of Education.
(iii) Frontier news. —Fighting between the followers and allies of Shuja-
ul-Mulk and the Persian Gendarmes. Flight of Shuja into Afghanistan.
Expectation of the Amir’s orders regarding the question of assistance to-
Shuja-ul-Mulk.
[iv) Foreign intelligence. —Seth Chotani, Indian representative, entertained
the Afghan and Egyptian deputations (in London) and stated that Indian
Muslims were friendly towards Afghanistan. Indian Muslims will not rest
until the sacred places wrested from Turkey are freed. The Afghan, Wali
Khan, said that Afghanistan was desirous of independence and believed in
the goodwill of Indians.
(«) The Turco-French Treaty. — Negotiations towards a Franco-Turkish
Treaty are proceeding. Bakar Sammi Bek and Dr. Rashid Bek met the French
Prime Minister on three occasions. He has accepted a boundary line
based on the nationality of the populations concerned. The Turkish represen
tatives will soon leave for Angora.

The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
