Merve. 2nd September 1921.-1,600. Majority Muslims, 300 of these are
mounted and belong to 9th Chyernyaevski Regiment 5th Tashkent. Detach
ments of 2nd and 3rd Tashkent Regiments two guns only seen, one aeroplane, one
armoured train.
Charjui. 6fh September 1921.-2,000. Majority Muslims. Units, 1st Turkes
tan Cavalry 500 men, under Gharib Nazarov. Detachment 12th Orenburg under
Askarzadeh. 13th Daghestan, Commanding Officer Churchil, an Armenian, 11th
Turkestan,three guns, one aeroplane, two armed cars, three lorries, four light cars.
Only 150 Yash Bokharni troops remain.
Termez. 2nd September 1921.-4,000. Majority Muslims. 1,000 of total is
cavalry, distributed as : 200 in Termez, 400 in posts along road to Kilif, 400 in posts
along river to Sarai Kamar. Units 2nd Young Bokharan, 1,500 men, 10th Turkes
tan, 11th Fortress Battalion, 19th Sapper Battalion, 9th Pontoon Battalion, 2nd
Amu Darya Frontier Brigade, all cavalry, 5th Kazan Battery, 12 guns seen,’ one
armed car, one lorry, two light cars, 30 transport carts.
Kilif. 3rd September 1921. — 250, including 100 cavalry and 150 of 8th Chern-
yaevski Regiment. In addition there are 100 Young Bokharan troops, two guns,
two magazines, one projector.
Qulab. 30th September 1921 . —1,000, including 200 cavalry. Unit 1 st Samara
under Gekvankov and 2nd-in-command, Hasanov. Two guns, five machine guns
Kagan. 4th September 1921. —2,500. Majority Muslims. Six guns, 10
magazines, three armoured cars, three aeroplanes, five lorries (?).
Samarkand. 3rd September 1921—1,000, including 300 mounted. Majority
Muslims. 200 of total are in the Fort. Guns six, one aeroplane, one armoured
car, two lorries, three light cars, one projector on truck, 30 transport carts.
Kiiojent. 30th August 1921 . —1,000. Majority Muslims. 2nd Skobelev and
11th Tashkent Regiments. 50 are mounted, six guns, eight machine guns, one
armoured car, one armoured engine, one aeroplane, one projector.
Kagan. Add : 500 cavalry, 5th Kazan Regiment, one regiment of Young
Bokharans under Hakimov.
Tashkent. 1st September 1921.-6,000. Majority Muslims. 2,000 of total are
cavalry, ] st Samara, Commanding Officer Alokin. 8th Tashkent, Commanding
Officer Mirza Jawad. 5th Tamburski, Commanding Officer Nikolai Nikolaivich.
2,000 Labour Corps personnel.
220. Afghanistan.
Herat. September 3rd to 9th. —There was a slight earthquake on 3rd Septem
ber but no damage was done.
(ii) A messenger from the Amir of Kain with an escort and three camel
loads of saffron, carpets, and costly stuffs, presents for the Amir of Afghanistan,
arrived in Herat. The Amir of Kain has some landed property in Herat and the
messenger has come to overlook it. He collects the revenue due from the estate
and will return with a reply to his letter to the Amir of Afghanistan. These presents
are usually sent every second or third year.
{in) Muhammad Azam Khan, Governor of Sabzvar arrived at Herat on the
4th instant to stand his trial before the Qazi in respect of certain charges brought
against him.
{iv) Rissaldar Khuda Bakhsh reports that the secretary to the Bolshevik Consul f /
still refuses to give a receipt for the Government furniture lent for the entertain- '
ment of the Plenipotentiary Raskolnikov. A letter has been addressed to the latter
on the subject.
(v) A firman A Persian word meaning a royal order or decree issued by a sovereign, used notably in the Ottoman Empire (sometimes written ‘phirmaund’). from Kabul orders a refund of all moneys paid to mullas as salary
from the public treasury within the last three years.
(vi) An urgent mail was brought from Kabul for the Naib-ul-Hukumeh on
the 6th.
