Among the 'W’hitegtjahds.
The treachery of the Generals advancing on the Far East Republic, their
venality, surprise nobody. Merkulov's gold-epauletted gang is silent.
Bickerings among the right party are on the increase. Semenov's partizans
are always at odds with the men of Merkulov. Even the leaders do not
trust Ataman Semenov. There is the greatest disorganization among the
white bandits—disorganization and disintegration. The hatred of the popula
tion of the pre-Amur region for these bandits is most marked and is increas
ing in volume, despite the fact that the Japanese gendarmes protect
the latter.
The fibst swallow.* , .
At the end of May the Dutch ship, “ Alexander Polden”, was the first to
arrive in Petrograd. She carried a cargo of herrings. From England five
ships arrived and from America one. , • ,;!,) >
Comrade Vuzmyap sees in this ship the first swallow of our spring for he
writes in the Petrograd “ Red Gazette "
M The first ship has arrived and spring is advancing quickly to assume
her dominion. Soon the cold frosts of morning will disappear. The window
looking out on to Europef which has remained sealed for seven years is again
flung open. Despite all the expectations and prophecies of our enemies,
despite all their efforts to interfere with the trade of Soviet Russia, that trade
begins to gather momentum. We shall soon be able to say ' All flags will be
our guests \ The blockade has been raised not in words but in deeds. The
world’s bourgeoisie hates us, nevertheless life must go on as usual. The
inevitable trend of events will force them to trade with us.”
No doubt our “friends” abroad, the Mensheviks, the 8 . R.'s and the
Cadets, will try to wreck our external trade but their ventures will fail to
succeed.
The first ship which reaches us proves that the world does not believe
the yarns of the Mensheviks that there is anarchy in Russia otherwise the
bourgeoisie would not have begun to trade with us. They know that trade
would be impossible unless there were strong law and order in the country.

About this item

Content

The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.

It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
