However the Cingalese have declined the gift, finding a constitution
reactionary. They demand a liberal autonomy and freedom from the rule of
the English Governor.
Extract from the “ Izvestia,” Moscow, dated 22nd January
1921.
In 1905 the Russian proletariat and especially the Petrograd workmen,
made the first attempt to free themselves. It is true that this rising was
quelled, but the working class cannot be killed by repression. In 1917 the
Russian workmen dealt two blows at their enemies, the first one was in March
at the Tnarist Government and the second in October at the Bourgeoise.
Although the Russian workman was the most oppressed member of the inter
national proletariat family, he now takes his place in the advance guard ot the
world revolution. By his example and activities he has opened cram the
history of mankind. He has now awakened the people of the west and East.
The idea of Communism and Soviet power is daily meeting with new successes.
At the present moment when we are counting our victories .and defeats, alter
many davs of fighting, and already see on the horizor the rising of the universal
liberation, we deeply feel for those that have fallen, but, at the same time we
are proud of what has been attained and remember those that laid the path for
their brothers.

About this item
- Content
The item consists of Part 1 of the subject file 1341/1921: 'Meshed Consular & Intelligence Diaries (1921-1922)'.
It contains numbered periodical (mainly weekly) reports relating to Persia [Iran], initially each called an 'Intelligence Summary' and later called a 'Meshed Intelligence Diary'. The reports cover the period of the week ending 1 January 1921 to the period ending 1 January 1923. They are initially issued by the British Military Mission, Meshed [Mashhad, also known as Mashad or Meshad], and later by the Military Attaché, Meshed. The intelligence summaries, and diaries, relate to political, foreign, military and diplomatic affairs in the locality and the neighbouring regions and are variously arranged under (chiefly) the following headings: 'Khorasan and North-East Persia'; 'Herat and Afghanistan'; 'Russian Turkistan'; 'Khorasan'; 'Cis-Frontier'; 'Trans-Frontier'; 'Afghanistan'; 'Bolshevik Garrisons'; 'Local'; 'Transcaspia'; 'Bokhara'; 'Tashkent'; 'Central Russia'; 'Khiva'; 'Ferghana'; 'General'; and 'Samarkand'. The summaries often include appendices which are usually extracts of local and national newspapers published in the regions and countries of interest, including Nabat , Rosta , Izvestia , Ittifaq-i-Islam , Bednota, Prolitarii , Sharq-i-Iran, and Pravda . Other appendices contain details of Bolshevik Garrisons in the region.
