Appendix.
Corrected Description of the Northern Boundary of Mosul Division.
Appendix 1 of the previous despatch described the northern boundary of Mosul
Division as now administered I venture now to substitute for this a definition of the
Mosul Vilayet boundaries at the time of the armistice, together with comments on the
limits of the actual administration in fact.
At the time of the armistice the corner formed by the junction of the Khabur with
the 1 igris, including the Christian village Faisbkhabur, belonged to the Vilayet of
Diarbekr. For obvious military reasons the corner was included in the armistice
frontier of Irak. For the remainder the boundary of the Mosul Vilayet was accepted at
the time as the normal administrative boundary of Irak. This runs as follows:—
from the junction of the rivers Tigris and Khabur along the Khabur eastwards to
its junction with t e Hazil River, northwards along the Hazil River as far as the influx
of the tributary from the two villages of Baijo (marked “ Belo ” on the Maunsell sheet),
thence along this tributary to its source in the Tanin Mountain. (The village of Nerwa
on the left bank is excluded, and both Baijos are included.) Thence north of Merga
and Hadrish, and across to the heights above Halamun and Geramus. The boundary then
turns south-east so as just to exclude Ashita and the Lizan Valley and just include
Dashtani; thence down the Zab Biver, crossing so as just to exclude Chal ; thence east
wards so as to include Nerwa and Raikan and just exclude the village of Nervek marked
on the Maunsell sheet. The district of Nerva is really west, not north, of Raikan ; the
correct relations are marked on the new |--inch compilation which I have appended to
this despatch. After crossing the Oramar River, the Mosul Vilayet boundary turns
south-east to the north-eastern end of the Gavanda tableland (marked “ high rocky
plateau ” on the Maunsell sheet). The boundary here takes a salient southward and
meets the River Haji Beg a few miles north of its junction with the Baradost River,
thence continuing along the line of the Haji Beg River to the Persian frontier.
In actual fact, owing to the recent return of the Tiari and Tkhuma to their homes,
the administration is now carried further in the north than the nominal boundary.
Moreover, the Glial and Oramar tribes, and a part of the Girdi, have recourse to the
Irak Government, although they live beyond the nominal boundary.
