261. No orders have been received to proceed with this
work ; the approach stands as re-
Manora Breakwater. ported on last year, also sanction
has been allowed to the preparation of experimental concrete
blocks, which is in progress, and to the deputation of Lieu
tenant Merewether, R.E., Executive Engineer, to seek along
the coast of Malabar for stone of a durable nature and large
size for the more exposed portion of the work.
262. As anticipated in the last report, the waves and
scour during last monsoon acted
Removal of Deep Water Point, strongly on Deep Water Point, so
much so that it has been found re
quisite, under the sanction of Government, to proceed with
the removal of the Port Department godowns, pier, and other
buildings to a safe position within the line of shore which it is
proposed to maintain.
This work is now in progress, and an embankment of
rough large blocks of Manora conglomerate is being formed
along the proposed shore line.
The scour of last monsoon has laid bare a considerable
shelf of conglomerate on the south-east face of the Point,
the existence of which was previously unknown ; a portion
of this has been removed by submarine blasting during the
past year, and its entire removal will not be difficult when
the proper time arrives, bearing in mind that the shelter
afforded by the Point to the anchorage above must be at least
partially maintained until the mouth of the Harbour shall
have been protected by the Manora Breakwater.
Revised estimates for the removal of the Point are in
preparation ; it is expected that they will amount to a sum
not exceeding (probably somewhat within) the estimate
formerly submitted, in which provision was made for the
