The passenger accommodation at a great many of the stations
is very deficient: the platforms require lengthening; the
goods shedding is quite inadequate to the demands of the
traffic, and accommodation for the employes of the Company
will certainly require to be much increased. A “ Schedule of
Works required” was prepared during the past year in con
cert with the Agent, the Engineer Department, the Traffic
Manager, and the Locomotive Superintendent, but it is found
useless to attempt to estimate beforehand for all the possible
wahts of a large undertaking like the G. I. P. Railway, for
of all the works for which sanction has been demanded during
the past six months only a very few appear in the schedule
that was prepared.
19. The Bhore Ghaut was worked throughout the
monsoon with scarcely an interruption to the traffic. One
landslip occurred which covered both lines to a depth of five
or six feet, but the passengers were transferred, and the line
was cleared in a couple of days. On the Thull Ghaut a very
serious accident occured on the 26th December, when a goods
train was precipitated over the embankment at the reversing
station (see Accidents). There was also one rather serious
landslip which blocked the down line for a week and the up
line for a whole month.
New Lines.
20. In order to collect the salt traffic it has been under
proposal to construct a new line from Campoolee to Hog Island;
the survey has been completed, but has not yet been laid be
fore Government.
21. Maintenance .—During the past year a great deal
has been done towards improving the state of line, necessita
ting a heavy expenditure in sleepers. During the last half of
1865 the cost per mile amounted to Rs. 1,724 against Rs. 990
