PUBLIC WORKS RAILWAY.
58. Bassein Bridges. —The piers of the Bassein bridges
have been examined by divers during the past season, and all
defective bolts and bracings found have been replaced. With
a view to ascertain whether the bolts in the inside flanges
below ground were affected by salt water, the Chief
Resident Engineer had one of the down-stream piles taken
up and examined, and found the damage to the bolts was
scarcely perceptible, though those connecting the external
flanges became quite rotten in a couple of years. It would
appear from this that the inside flanges are sufficiently pro
tected by the concrete filling, which works into the joint and
makes it water-tight, but further examination is being made.
59. Veturnee, Par, and Nerbudda Bridges .—At the
Yeturnee, the Par, and the Nerbudda bridges the piles have
been examined in like manner. At the Nerbudda it was
found that the bed of the river round three of the piles had
been scoured out considerably ; these have been protected by
a solid filling of concrete in 8 feet cylinders sunk 9 feet in the
river bed.
60. Two piers in the centre of the span of 90 feet in the
Nerbudda bridge which were washed away, one in 1864 and
the other in 1865, have been re-erected, and the 90-feet girders
will be removed and replaced by 45-feet girders as soon as the
second line of rails is laid and the traffic can be directed
over it.
61. Measures proposed for strengthening large Iron
Bridges. —After much discussion the following measures were
recommended for strengthening the larger iron bridges
1st. —To remove the strut piles and substitute a vertical
pile for each. The five piles of the pier to be
connected at top by a continuous cross girder of
sufficient strength to support the weight of the
roadway should any one pile give way. The hori*
zontal bracings to be double throughout the pier.
