PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.
Mr. E. I. Howard, late Director of Public Instruction,
having resigned his appointment
Changes in the Department. ^ ^ ^ ^ g ir A
Grant, Principal of the Elphinstone College, was promoted
to be Director of Public Instruction.
2. Consequent on this promotion, Mr. K. M. Chat-
field, B.A., of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, was appoint
ed by Her Majesty’s Secretary of State to be Principal of
the Elphinstone College, and joined his appointment on the
29th March 1866.
3. Dr. Martin Haug, Superintendent of Sanskrit
Studies in the Poona College, in conformity with notice
given by him last year, retired from his appointment on the
15th of January 1866.
4. Dr. Franz Kielhorn, of the University of Leipsic,
was appointed by the Secretary of State to succeed Dr.
Haug, and arrived in Bombay on the 27th February 1866.
5. Owing to the decease of Mr. E. P. Steevenson,
Head Master of High School, Ahmedabad, and Principal of
Gujarat Provincial College, Mr. W. H. Smith, Principal of
Poona Vernacular College, was appointed to these vacancies.
6. Mr. A. Barrett having been appointed by the Se
cretary of State to succeed Mr. Steevenson in his previous
appointment of Head Master of the Elphinstone Institution
(now styled Vice-Principal of the Elphinstone High School)?
joined his appointment on the 4th of August 1865.

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1865-66.

The report is divided into the following headings, some of which are further divided into sub-headings:

[Ottoman Iraq] and Asia Minor [Turkey]); C (a letter from Colonel Goldsmid and reports by himself, Major Smith of the Royal Engineers, and Mr Johnstone, British Agent at Busrah [Basra], of the journey from Ispahan [Isfahan] to Gwadur [Gwadar] to survey the land for connecting the Persian [Iranian] and Mekran Coast land lines of the telegraph); and D (a letter from Colonel Goldsmid with enclosure proposing an alternative land line from Gwadur to join the main Persian line between Bushire [Bushehr] and Tehran).
