PUBLIC INSTRUCTION.
7. On the promotion of Mr. W. H. Smith, Mr. Krishna
Shastri Chiplonkar was appointed Principal of the Poona
Vernacular College (now styled Poona Training College).
8. Mr. H. S. Bellairs having been previously appointed
by the Secretary of State to be Head Master of the Belgaum
(

Leader of a tribe or a polity; also refers to a military rank or title given to a commander of an army or division.
) High School, took up this appointment on the 16th
of January 1866.
9. Mr. F. W. Wilson, previously Acting Head Master
of the Belgaum High School, was then transferred to be Head
Master of the Surat High School, an appointment which had
been for several months vacant.
10. At the beginning of the official year Mr. Piam-
Krishna Gopal Bhandarkar, M. A., of the Bombay University
was appointed Head Master of the Rutnagherry High
School in succession to Mr. G. Russell resigned.
11. On the 1st of February 1866 Mr. Vitthal Narayen
Patak was appointed Head Master of the Dhoolia High
School, vice Mr. W. Burton superseded.
12. On the 16th October 1865 Mr. W. Jeaffreson,
Principal of the Elphinstone High School, having proceeded
to Europe on sick certificate, Mr. W. Draper, Assistant
Educational Inspector Central Division, was appointed to act
in the vacant appointment.
13. On 1st February 1866 Mr. J, Nugent, C.S., was
appointed to act as Assistant Educational Inspector Central
Division.
14. On the 14th of October 1865 Dr. H. Giraud having
i esigned the appointment of Principal in the Grant Medical
College, was succeeded by Surgeon R. Haines, M.B.
15. On the 26th of April 1866, owing to the lamented
decease of Dr. Haines, Assistant Surgeon W. G. Hunter was
appointed to the vacant Principalship.
