One native gentleman (Mr. Gopal Hurry) also acted during part of the year
as Assistant Judge and Session Judge. These officers disposed of 983
criminal cases, 150 original suits, and 3379 appeals. The official statement

during the year 1862, and what was the propor
tion of business done by each, holds thirty-seven names. Among these
names appear those of Magistrates and Principal Sudder Ameens and
Deputy Collectors, whose judicial functions in the view of this return seem
to have been limited to the issue of orders on judicial business. Of such
orders 31,671 in all were made within the calendar year.

5. Taking all the Courts, Civil
Agency
An office of the East India Company and, later, of the British Raj, headed by an agent.
, and Revenue, the number of
suits that were on the file awaiting adjudication for any part of the year 1862
was 240,805, of which 44,474 remained undisposed of at the end of the year.
Jagheerdar and Revenue Courts and Punchayets being excluded, it appears
that out of 137,262 regularly appealable cases on the files of the Courts
of Civil Judicature for any part of the year, 4566 were appealed, while of
2838 specially appealable cases 443 were appealed. At the close of the
year 3515 appeals of both sorts were depending.
6. The relative efficiency of the different grades of courts may be to
some extent gathered from the table of Aggregate Appellate Jurisdiction. In
the Moonsiff Courts out of 114,957 decided and appealable cases, 3544 were
appealed, making, with arrears from the year before, a total of 4907 appeals
entertained from the Moonsiff Courts during the year. 2649 of these
appeals were disposed of; in 1238 cases the issue being a remand, a modi
fication of the original decision, or a total reversal. In the case of Sudder
Ameens, out of 14,239 appealable cases 506 were appealed. The whole
number of appeals for any time on the files during the year was 706. Of
these 319 were disposed of, 132 decisions having been remanded, reversed,
or modified. From 7958 appealable decisions of Principal Sudder Ameens,
496 appeals were made to the upper courts during the year. Appeals
in all entertained from Principal Sudder Ameens for any part of the year
number 710. The result was 65 reversals, 38 remands, and 47 modifications,
330 being left over undisposed of at the close of the year. Of superior
courts, including the Sudder Dewanee Adawlut, from 2916 appealable
decisions 463 appeals were made, and out of 1012 appeals on the file, 127
ended in a remand, 62 in a reversal, and 25 in modifications.
