CONSERVANCY AND MUNICIPAL ADMINISTRATION.
21. Revised rates of assessment bad been or were about to be intro
duced at the date of report into the following districts:—
I. The Walwa Talooka, of the Saltara Collectorate.
II. The Mamlutdars’ and Tulleh Mahalkurrees’ Divisions, of the
Rajpooree Talooka in the Colaba Sub-Collectorate.
III. The Mahim Talooka, of the Tanna Collectorate.
22. In the unhealthy Mahim Talooka proposals have been made to
increase the wholesomeness of the air and water by preventing the contamina
tion of the wells by decayed vegetable matter, and by clearing teak trees away
from the immediate vicinage of villages. The growth of date trees wild
in the jungle by furnishing a ready means of obtaining drink is one cause
of the demoralisation of the wild tribes inhabiting this part oi the Concam
Orders were to be issued for the destruction of these trees.
23. The settlement of the Tulleh Division will, it is hoped, have the
effect of causing extra land to be taken up in cultivation. Hitherto
Government in this district has been in the habit of taking its share m
the profits from a rise in prices of agricultural produce. Consequent y,
in spite of the gradually increasing price of grain, cultivation for the last
ten years has been at a stand-still.
24. In the Walwa Talooka the present high prices have rendered
considerable tracts of inferior soil profitable for cultivation. These lands,
never known within the memory of man to have been before cultivated,
are now frequently the object of keen competition.
25. In all the settlements, right has been reserved to Government
of imposing a farther cess for local purposes of education and material
improvement.
