Rs. 38-3-11, and the net amount of profits realised by the snle of articles this year is
Rs. 2,447-13-2, and that notwithstanding the transfer of all long-term prisoners to work
on the roads, including some skilled hands from the factory—a result which, with such a
small number of prisoners, will, I trust, be considered satisfactory.

These results are not satisfactory in spite of the guards having been reduced by
Rs. 6 - 3-6 per prisoner ; the gross cost is extremely high. The principal increase has been
in the rations, owing to the high price of all articles of food.
8 . Under this head the Session Judge reports that “ prisoners sentenced to twelve
months’ imprisonment and under are confined in the new sepa-

term are locked up in the old large cells.” It seems to me that this system should be
reversed, and that long-termed prisoners should be confined in the separate cells, and
those of shorter periods in the wards in association.
