65. 8d. sterling. There is not, however, at present any coin of
the value of a toman 10,000 Persian dinars, or a gold coin of that value. . It is only a word used in accounts.
The roads by which goods are imported into Azerbaijan are Trade routes,
from Europe generally, via Trebizond and Lrzeroum, and from
Russia via Tiflis and «J nlfa, and also by the port of Astera on the
Caspian. .
The statistics of trade are collected and given for these roads, ^
but there is a small import of goads to the extreme south of the ^3
province, both from Alexandretla, via Aleppo and Mosul, and /
via Baghdad and Sulimanieh. These goods are chiefly English,
and no°statistics of that trade are available, as the Persian Govern- >J
ment give no assistance in collecting information. There is also \
a considerable export trade in the south of the province of gall- -—*
nuts, wool, gum, tragacanth, &c., which, going via Sehna in Persia
to Baghdad, and not crossing a customs line when leaving
Azarbaijan, it is dillicult to trace. It is hoped that some arrange
ment may be made for the collection of these statistics during the
current year.
The only especial opening for English goods, beyond those Openings for
already imported, would seem to be in hardware. . Really good ^^' are
English pen-knives (not pocket-knives) are much in request foi
mending the reed pens with which all writing is done. It requires
a very superior knife to mend these pens properly. Padlock- 1 ,
screws, butchers’ knives, saws, and adzes of a quality adapted to
the country would also meet a ready sale. It would be necessai^
for whoever undertook the hardware business to stud\ the maiket
on the spot. The cheapest way to travel is by steamer from Routes to
London or Liverpool to B.itoum, from thence by tne 1 1 ans• c <^t reez an
Caucasus railway, via Tiflis, to Akstata on the iiflis and Baku
line of railway, and drive from thence to Pabrcez. I he journey
can be accomplished, travelling second-class, for > 10 /. d here is no
difficulty for anyone speaking German, the number of German-
speaking employes on the .Russian 1 ranscaucasus iailv\ay ami
at the telegraph stations being very large. A person speaking
both French and German would have no difficulty whatever on
the journey.
