5. The import trade in raw silk from Kabul has in some degree revived
from the depression of last year; but it is observed that import from Kashmir
has entirely ceased, though the trade with that country was of the value of
If lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees in the year 1885-86. It has elsewhere been suggested that the decrease
is due to the rise of price in Bokhdra and export to European Russia by the
Caspian Railway.
6. The export trade in Indian tea amounted to Rs. 3,99,097, an increase
of a lakh One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees on the figures of last year. Sixty-four per cent, of the increase was in the
trade to Kabul, while the amount of foreign tea exported to that country was
slightly less than last year. The Lieutenant-Governor has lately addressed the
Government of India on the subject of the transit duties imposed on Indian tea
in Afghanistan. The trade to Ladakh, though it shows an improvement of 150
per cent, on last year, has by no means recovered from the depression due to the
imposition of duties in Y drkand, and it is improbable that the Chinese will allow
it to recover its hold of the markets in that country.
7. The very great increase in the export of European and Indian cotton
piece-goods (21 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees and 10 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees ) is, as already observed, particularly marked
in the trade with Kabul.
