From

To

Offg. Chief Secretary to Government, Punjab.
Sir,
I am directed to submit the usual annual statements of the External Land
Trade of the Punjab for the year 1889-90.
In accordance with the wishes of Government, the remarks which I am to
offer on the statistics will be brief.
2. Special attention has been directed this year to the matter of routes
across the frontier and the levy of customs dues along them. The information
supplied is too various and voluminous to be conveniently included in the body
of a report so brief as this, and it has, under the orders of the Financial Com
missioner, been relegated to an Appendix (A).
3. 1 he supervision of the work of trade registration has been provided
for in nearly every frontier district by the nomination of an Assistant Com
missioner or Extra Assistant Commissioner for the duty. In many instances
during the year mistakes were found in statements submitted by Deputy Com
missioners ; and in a few cases in which the carelessness displayed was great,
the Deputy Commissioners were asked to consider the propriety of punishing
the clerk at fault. J 1 5
