have been completed^ the first named at a cost of Rs. 17,784.
The estimate for the year 1880-81 provides Rs. 5,68,877 for
expenditure on original works and repairs in the State including
feudatories.
The following are figures for 1878-79 and not for 1879-80 as
in other States.
The actual receipts were Rs. 16,44,080 as compared with
Rs. 14,55,358 for the previous year, and expenditure Rs. 15,36,808
as compared with Rs. 17,81,488. The credit balance at the end
of the year was Rs. 29,53,188, of which Rs. 22,11,400 were
invested in 4 per cent. Government paper, a larger amount than
has ever been so invested before. The collections on account
of land revenue were Rs. 23,256 more than in 1877-78. An
uncollected balance of Rs. 1,41,610 remained at the close of the
year. The great part of this has been since collected. In the
sayar revenue there was a falling off of Rs. 6,650. A balance of
Rs. 18,091 is outstanding.
During the year 1879-80, for which actuals are not yet ready,
a deficit of Rs. 87,833 is expected which will have to be met
from the invested funds.
The number of births and deaths registered were respectively
13,547 and 16,225; during the previous year they were 7,534
and 20,674. At Kolhapur, there are a civil hospital, a jail
hospital and an infantry hospital. In the civil hospital 1,460 in-
and 11,283 out-patients were treated. The average daily number
of in-patients was 79. In the infantry hospital 367 men were
treated. A small lunatic asylum is attached to the civil hos
pital. Twenty-six persons were treated in it; more than half of
these were cured.
A dispensary has been opened at Gad Hinglaj. One thousand
eight hundred and seventy persons were treated during the five
months it has existed.
The State expenditure on medical services^ including vaccina
tion, was Rs. 20,750. The number of vaccinations performed
was 15,342 as compared with 12,850 last year. A scheme to
drain the town of Kolhapur and thus improve its sanitary condi
tion is being matured.
During the year under review there has been a net increase of
H schools and 1,005 scholars. The percentage of population
under instruction is 9*35 per mille. The State has spent
Rs. 43,686 on education this year as compared with Rs. ,
during the previous year.
The Rajaram High School has been converted, under sanction
of Government, into a Provincial College with special classes tor
Sardars. In all 14 young Sardars are now under instruction m it
und are making satisfactory progress. The total number on Q
rolls are 284, and the daily attendance was 241. . Twen y-six
students went up from this school for the matriculation examina
tion.; of these 18 passed. In the training school there wei - e 24
students. Since its first establishment in 1867 this school has
Kolhapur.
