5. Kevenue operations show a net credit balance of Rs. 1,81_,487, receipts being Rs. 8,80,150
and expenditure Rs. 6,98,663. The opening credit balance in cash and securities was
Rs 58,46,000 which was reduced in July 1903 to Rs. 51,89,000. A fresh loan of Rs. 60 Mkhs,
bearing interest at 4 per cent, and having a currency of 60 years, was raised. The average rate of
accepted tenders was Rs. 100J. The year closed with a credit balance of Rs. 71,75,935. The
capital expenditure of the Board rose from Rs. 38,89,400 to Rs. 49,59,835, of which nearly

11. Military (Volunteering).
1 . Camps of exercise were held by the Bombay Light Horse, Bombay Volunteer Artillery,
Bombay Volunteer Rifles, 1st and 2nd G. I. P. Railway Volunteer Rifles, 1st and 2nd B. B. &
C. I. Railway Volunteer Rifles, Nagpur Volunteer Rifles, Poona Volunteer Rifles, Baluchistan
Volunteer Rifles, Sind Volunteer Rifles and Karachi Artillery Volunteers.
Government have sanctioned the formation of a few sections of Mounted Rifles in
connection with the 2nd Battalion B. B. & G. I. Railway Volunteer Rifles. A cadet company
has been raised among the members of the Albert High School, Panchgani. It is to form part
of rhe Poona Volunteer Rifle Corps.

1.*—Bombay.
1. The number of European seamen shipped was 2,570 and that of those discharged
2,275. Deserters fell from 74 to 46 and the number of seamen left in jail from 32 to 23.
The number left in hospital however increased form 44 to 51. Nine seamen were sent home
distressed and subsistence was given to 20. Seamen^s money orders showed a further large decline
of Rs. 4,247 to Rs. 1,013 in value. Charges on account of distressed seamen fell to Rs. 328.
2 . The number of native seamen shipped showed a further rise from 30,371 to 35,024,
while the number discharged showed a corresponding increase to 30,832. Deaths increased by
21 to 150, while the number left in jail rose from 9 to 78. Charges on account of distressed
native seamen rose further to Rs. 1,257.
3. The gross revenue showed an increase of Rs. 8,389 or 14 per cent, over the figures
of the previous year. Expenditure increased very slightly and the net profit rose to Rs. 49,169.
Ernes showed a slight decrease and Registry fees a slight increase.
2.—Aden.
The number of European and native seamen engaged were 130 and 1,506 against 16 and
1,357 in 1902-03 respectively : the numbers discharged were 167 European and 1,424 native
seamen against 72 and 1,210 in the previous year. Thirty-two Europeans were sent to the
United Kingdom. The amount realised in fees rose from Rs. 2,826 to Rs. 3,464.

1. The gross receipts were Rs. 64,40,955 and they establish a record for the third
year in succession exceeding last year's figures by Rs. 5J

Annual administration report of the Bombay Presidency The name given to each of the three divisions of the territory of the East India Company, and later the British Raj, on the Indian subcontinent. , providing a summary record of the main events and developments in each department of the Government of Bombay From c. 1668-1858, the East India Company’s administration in the city of Bombay [Mumbai] and western India. From 1858-1947, a subdivision of the British Raj. It was responsible for British relations with the Gulf and Red Sea regions. during the financial year 1903-04. The report was printed at the Government Central Press, Bombay [Mumbai] in 1904.
