work. Dredging operations show an increase of 46,265 tons in the amount of material removed,
while the costT slightly decreased. The village of Keam^ri was completed and fully occupied
and the need for further accommodation for labourers has already been made manifest.
5.—Aden Port Trust.
The trade of the Port of Aden increased by 90
lakhs
One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees
during the year and this caused
a rise in the receipts of the Aden Port Trust of Rs. 77,794 to Rs. 4,65,638. The expenditure
rose by Rs. 16,311 to Rs. 3,77,804. The result was a surplus of Rs. 87,834 against one of
Rs. 26,351 in 1902-1903. Dredging operations were continued. 297,000 tons of spoil were
lifted and deposited at an average cost of 5*3 annas per ton against 477,000 tons at an average
cost of 2*74 annas in the previous year. Merchant vessels entering the port increased by
124 to 1,369 in number. The cost of new works and improvements carried out during the year
was Rs. 47,353.
g.—I ndus Conservancy Department.
1. Snagging operations extended as usual from Kashmor to Keti Bandar. Twenty-seven
snags and some small trees were removed from the river. Besides this a considerable number
of trees and snags were removed from the mouth of the Uchito.
2. No changes of great importance took place in the course of the river during the year.
3. The number and manndage of boats registered increased to 3,489 and 763,146
respectively. The actual river-borne traffic between Sind and the Punjab, however, decreased
from 1,422,598 to 986,804 mannds.
4. The receipts during the year were Rs. 17,012 against Rs. 16,712 in 1902-03. Tbe
expenditure decreased by Rs. 11,653 to Rs. 23,787, the decrease being due to the fact that
during 1902-1903 Rs. 13,000 were spent on purchasing the S. S. “Fatteh Mubarak.”
5. Five eases of offences against the conservancy rules were tried, four of which resulted
in convictions*
