in survey and the preparation of the Record of Rights.
2. Arrangements were made for the instruction, of Junior Civilians in survey matters in,
their own districts under the supervision of the Superintendents of Land Records and Registrar
tion instead of in a Central Class at Poona, In all, four Junior Civilians and one Probationary
District Deputy Collector qualified themselves m the survey course. Central Survey Classes
for the training of newly appointed Circle Inspectors were opened at the head-quarter towns in
all the three divisions, where they received instruction in the theoretical course for the usual
period of 6 weeks. The period of the field course was tentatively revised this year with the
view of allowing greater time for the independent work of each Circle Inspector, the result
of the examination being made to depend completely upon the independent work done by
Circle Inspectors in the field. In all 79 Circle Inspectors attended the classes, of whom 41
passed the survey test. Survey classes for Village Accountants. were held in most of the
districts as usual and the course for their instruction was aiso revised with a view to ensure
adequate training in measurement. As the period for holding these classes was changed in
some of the districts the actual number of Village Accountants who passed the field examina
tion was not definitely known. In all the three divisions these classes for Village Accountants
were generally held at convenient centres in each district, which enabled the Superintendents
of Land Records and Registration to exercise much closer supervision.
3. The preparation of the Record of Rights was newly started in one pethaof the
Central Division and in three talukas of the Southern Division. In two talukas of the
Central Division, the compilation of the Record started in the preceding year, was continued
and finished during the year under report. This year the forms of the Record of Rights and
the Mutation Register which have been revised recently, have been ordered to be used for the
fair copy of the Record in the Mulshi petha and the Maval taluka in the Central Division
and in the Bdgewadi, Sindgi and Vengurla talukas of the Southern Division, where the
preparation of the Record was newly started. The work of inspection and preparation of
the Record of Rights and Mutation Registers was conducted on the same lines as in the
previous year.
4. The sub-division measurement experiment ordered in Government Resolution
No. 4765, dated 10th May 1907, was further continued in some of the districts in all the
three divisions. The Superintendent, Land Records and Registration, Northern Division,
supervised this work in the Wankaner village of the Bdrdoli tdluka in the Surat District
where it was undertaken on a large scale. Similar operations were also carried out in the
Ahmedabad District. In the Central Division the work of Pot Hissa measurement was carried
out with the help of Kulkarnis trained in survey in the districts of Satara, ShoLCpur, Poona,
East and West Khdndesh and NAsik. In all, 160 villages and 16,728 sub-divisions were
completed. In the Southern Division the work was carried on in the' Bad&mi and Hungund
talukas of Bijapur District. In one village of the former taluka, 101 sub-divisions comprised
in 25 survey numbers were measured; in the Hungund tdluka 4,352 sub-divisions were
measured in 1,230 survey numbers of 42 villages.

kan, all of whom, with the exception of 1 Mukhtyarkar, received certificates of competency'
Survey Classes for tapadars no longer exist, but those fcapaddrs who were found to have
forgotten their survey work, received instruction with the Survey Parties.
2. The preparation of the Record of Rights was commenced in 6 talukas of Hyderabad
District, in 4 talukas of Karachi District and 2 tdlukas of L^rkana District. The Record wa
also promulgated and introduced in 3 talukas and in 53 debs of another tdlnka in
•Uistnct and was almost ready for promulgation in 2 talukas of Thar and Parkar, where prepai
non was m progress m a third taluka. In the Upper Sind Frontier District the rough reco
was completed m 2 talukas and in part of another taluka.
