2 The Port Trust Traffic Returns show large decreases under Imports in imiM;,,
materials coal and grain, while the increases were in cotton, kerosme oil piece-goods and saga?,
fn exports there were no noticeable decreases except m twist and yarn. Tnere were large increases
rn exports of cotton, grain, kerosine oil and seeds and substantial increases under nearly every
other item of export.
3. The total tonnage of vessels which entered the port during the year was 4,083,905.
The number of steamers was 2,531 with aggregate tonnage of 3,342, //b tons against 2,642
with a tonnage of 3,321,026 in the previous year.

5. The total expenditure on capital works was Rs. 82 51,534, a decrease of nearly 7 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees .
The Alexandra Dock Works absorbed over 50 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees and the Mazagon-Sewn Reclamation 26 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees .
Two debenture loans, each bearing interest at 4 per cent., were raised during the year ; one of
Rs 75 lakhs One lakh is equal to one hundred thousand rupees for the Mazagon-Sewri Reclamation with a currency ot 30 years and the other of
Rs.' 40 Ukhsfor the new Dock Works with a currency of 60 years The total debt of the Board
at the close of the year amounted to Rs. 9,00,/'O,/89 of which Rs. 3,01,61,113 are due to
Government.
4 .— Karachi Port Trust.
1. The receipts increased by Rs. 7,41,592 to Rs. 32,87,241, and the expenditure rose from
Rs. 24,39,571 to^Ks. 29,34,886. The receipts constitute a record due entirely to increase of
export trade in grain and seeds. The import trade shows a slight decrease principally in wines
and spirits, railway material and piece-goods. The Reserve lund which was increased by an
addition of Rs. 16,544 now stands at Rs. 20,16,544.
2. The expenditure on engineering works decreased by Rs. 13,280 to Rs. 33,93,556.
The number of berths was increased by 3 and the length of wharfage by S25 yards to 3,025
yards. The amount dredged during the year was 1,612,779 tons, an increase of 391,410 tons.
The total number of steamers entering the port was 464 against 356 in the preceding year,
Of these 36 had a draught of 26 feet and over against 17 in the previous year.
5.—Aden Port Trust.
1. Receipts fell from Rs. 4,56,231 to Rs. 4,44,913 and expenditure from Rs. 5,26,452 to
Rs. 4,02,059, the closing balance being Rs. 3,53,696. There was a decline in export of salt and
in imports of kerosine oil, coal, cotton piece-goods (grey), grain and pulse. Increase was
most noticeable in bides, skins, dates, treasure, and raw ivory.
2. Expenditure on Engineering Works increased from Rs. 99,212 to Rs. 1,37,901. The
dredging scheme v/as carried out by contract and two deep berths 890 feet long by 400 feet
wide were dredged. The new light-house has been completed at a cost of Rs. 38,614.
3. The number of vessels which entered the port during the year, exclusive of Government
vessels, was 2,609 with an aggregate tonnage of 3,223,421 tons compared with 2,485 vessels
and a tonnage of 2,992,714 tons in the year preceding.
13. Co-operative Credit Societies.
For details we the Annual Report on the Co-operative Credit Societies for the year 1S09-1910 and tables under
Co-operative Credit Societies printed in Part il of the Statistics of British India. This report actually covers
onl} nine mouths, the co-operative year having been changed to make it conterminous with the financial year.
1.—Presidency Proper.
1. During the year the number of Societies increased by 39 to 208. The actual numbei
Ox new Societies registered wa,s 40 but one Society was cancelled. Of the total number 56 wer
Urban and 152 Rural Societies compared with 49 and 120 respectively in the preceding year
in the Northern Division the number of Societies increased from 43 to 64, in the Central Division
rom /4 to 87, of which 61 were in Satdra district, and in the Southern Division the increase o
rings the number up to 54, half of these being in Dharwdr. The membership of Urbai
